What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e Use?

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e uses four HP 936 cartridges — Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow — with HP 936e EvoMore as the high-yield version. HP does not make an "HP 936XL"; anything sold under that name is a third-party cartridge.

HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e Ink Cartridges at a Glance

Cartridge Color Approx. Page Yield
HP 936 Black Black ~1,250 pages
HP 936 Cyan / Magenta / Yellow Color (sold individually) ~800 pages each
HP 936e EvoMore Black Black ~2,500 pages
HP 936e EvoMore Cyan / Magenta / Yellow Color (sold individually) ~1,650 pages each

The 9120e takes four separate cartridges, so you replace only the color that runs out. The cartridges that ship in the box are lower-yield setup versions, so an early low-ink warning is normal. The same HP 936 / 936e family fits the whole OfficeJet Pro 9100e series — 9110b, 9120e, 9122e, 9125e, 9128e, 9130e and 9135e — and the OfficeJet Pro Wide Format 9730e.

Important — HP+ warning: The "e" in HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e means it was sold for HP+. If you activated HP+ during setup, the printer is locked to Original HP cartridges for its lifetime, and compatible or remanufactured cartridges will be rejected with a "cartridge problem" or "non-HP cartridge" message. HP+ cannot be switched off after activation. If you skipped HP+ at setup, compatible cartridges work normally — see how to keep HP firmware updates from blocking your ink and our HP Instant Ink vs. compatible cartridges breakdown before you buy.

The 9120e is a small-office all-in-one with print, scan, copy and fax, a 35-sheet automatic document feeder, automatic two-sided printing and a 250-sheet tray. Do not confuse HP 936 with HP 962 (OfficeJet Pro 9010 series) or HP 910 (OfficeJet Pro 8020 series) — none of them are interchangeable.

Buying HP 936 / 936e Ink

Castle Ink does not stock HP 936 cartridges yet. You can compare genuine HP 936 and 936e options here: HP 936 ink on Amazon (as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases). If HP+ is active, buy Original HP only; if it is not, choose a seller that guarantees its chips work with current HP firmware — see how to keep HP firmware updates from blocking your ink.

How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e

  1. Turn the printer on and open the ink cartridge access door. Wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  2. Press the front of the cartridge to release it, then pull it out.
  3. Unwrap the new cartridge, holding it by the sides without touching the copper contacts.
  4. Slide it into the slot that matches its color label and push until it clicks.
  5. Close the door and let the printer finish any alignment it starts.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge problem" or "non-HP cartridge": Check HP+ status in the HP Smart app first — with HP+ active, only Original HP cartridges will work. Otherwise, reseat the cartridge until it clicks and wipe the chip contacts.

Streaks or banding: Run "Clean Printhead" from the printer's Tools menu. The printhead is a permanent part of the printer, so one or two cleaning cycles usually help. If they do not, print a print-quality diagnostic report before running more.

Low ink soon after setup: The in-box setup cartridges hold less ink than retail HP 936 cartridges. That is expected.

Bottom Line

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e runs on HP 936, and HP 936e EvoMore is the high-yield option — there is no official 936XL. Check whether HP+ is active before buying anything other than Original HP ink.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an HP 936XL?
Not from HP. HP's high-yield version is called HP 936e EvoMore. "936XL" listings are third-party cartridges.

Will HP 962 cartridges fit the 9120e?
No. HP 962 is for the OfficeJet Pro 9010 series. The 9120e only accepts HP 936 and 936e.

Does using third-party cartridges void my warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, HP cannot void your printer warranty only because you used third-party cartridges. HP+ is a separate restriction you agree to during setup.

How are these page yields measured?
They are approximate figures based on HP's ISO/IEC 24711 testing. Real results depend on what and how often you print.
