What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said the 9120e uses HP 936. HP 936 is the cartridge for the US models (9125e, 9130e, 9135e). The 9120e is sold in Europe, Asia and Oceania and takes HP 937.
Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e uses four HP 937 cartridges (black, cyan, magenta and yellow), with HP 937e EvoMore as the high-capacity version. HP does not make a 937XL. If you bought your printer in the US or Canada, it is a 9125e, 9130e or 9135e, and it takes HP 936. The two families are region-coded and not interchangeable.

Can I use non-HP ink in the 9120e?
Not reliably. The 9100e series uses HP dynamic security, which blocks cartridges with aftermarket chips, and HP firmware updates can block cartridges that worked before. If HP+ was switched on at setup, HP's terms also require Original HP ink, an HP account and a permanent internet connection. Castle Ink does not sell HP 937 cartridges.
How to replace a cartridge
- With the printer on, open the ink access door and wait for the carriage to stop.
- Press the front of the empty cartridge to release it, then pull it out.
- Unwrap the new cartridge, holding it by the sides, and slide it into its color-coded slot until it clicks.
- Close the door. The printer checks the cartridge and may run a short alignment.

Can I use cartridges from a US 9125e?
No. HP cartridges are region-coded: a 9120e takes HP 937 and a 9125e takes HP 936. If you moved country with the printer, buy cartridges for the region where it was sold.
Does it scan both sides in one pass?
No. The document feeder scans two-sided originals in two passes, at about 4 images a minute for duplex scans. Single-pass duplex scanning is on the 9130e/9135e.
Can I receive faxes without a landline?
The built-in fax needs a phone line. Without one, use an online fax service through the HP app or your computer.
Can I print on cardstock?
Yes. HP lists support for card stock up to about 110 lb. Feed heavy sheets one at a time.
Do I have to sign up for Instant Ink?
No. HP+ and Instant Ink are optional at setup, but turning HP+ down means losing the bonus trial ink.
OfficeJet Pro 9120e quirks worth knowing
- The fax is color-capable and stores about 100 pages in memory.
- There is a front USB port for printing from a thumb drive, but it can't print borderless from USB. Copies are capped at 600 dpi even though the scanner does 1,200 dpi.
- If a firmware update interrupts first-time setup, the setup cartridges can be marked "used". Let the update finish before installing ink.
