What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e Use?

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e uses four HP 936 cartridges — Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow — with HP 936e EvoMore high-yield versions that print about twice as many pages. HP does not make an "XL" in this family, so anything sold as "HP 936XL" is a third-party cartridge.

The OfficeJet Pro 9135e is the top model in HP's 9130e series: print, scan, copy and fax, a 35-sheet automatic document feeder with two-sided scanning, automatic two-sided printing, a 250-sheet tray and a color touchscreen. HP rates it at about 25 pages per minute in black and 20 in color.

The same HP 936 / 936e cartridges fit HP's whole current OfficeJet Pro line: the OfficeJet 9122e, OfficeJet Pro 9110b, 9125e, 9128e, 9130b and 9135e, and the OfficeJet Pro Wide Format 9730e. See our HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e ink guide for the sister model. Outside North America HP sells the same printers with HP 937 cartridges, which are not interchangeable with US HP 936.

Do not confuse HP 936 with HP 962 (OfficeJet Pro 9010/9020 series) or HP 910 (OfficeJet Pro 8020 series). They will not fit.

Before You Buy: HP+ and the HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e

The "e" in the model name means the HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e was sold as an HP+-eligible printer. If HP+ was activated during setup, HP's terms require Original HP cartridges for the life of the printer, plus an HP account and an internet connection. Third-party cartridges — ours or anyone else's — will not work in an HP+ enrolled printer, and there is no published way to undo it. If HP+ was declined at setup, the printer behaves like a normal printer and compatible or remanufactured cartridges work. Not sure? Look for HP+ branding in the HP Smart app or on the printer's information page. Buying used? Ask the seller before you stock up on ink.

Where Castle Ink Stands on HP 936

Castle Ink does not stock HP 936 cartridges yet, so we are not going to pretend otherwise. HP 936e EvoMore has the lowest cost per page of the genuine options — compare 936 and 936e sets here: HP 936e ink on Amazon (as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases). If your printer is not HP+ enrolled and you try compatibles, choose a seller that says its chips are current — see how to keep HP firmware updates from blocking your ink.

If you also run older HP, Canon, Epson or Brother printers, we very likely stock their ink — look them up on our Find Ink by Printer page, or run your numbers through our printer ink cost calculator.

How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e

  1. Open the ink cartridge access door on the front of the printer and wait for the carriage to stop.
  2. Press the front of the empty cartridge to release it, then pull it straight out.
  3. Unwrap the new cartridge. Hold it by the sides and do not touch the copper contacts.
  4. Slide it into the slot that matches its color label and press until it clicks.
  5. Close the door and let the printer finish its short calibration.

Troubleshooting Tips

Cartridge not recognized: Reseat it firmly until it clicks and wipe the chip contacts. If the printer is HP+ enrolled, a non-HP cartridge will not clear the error.

Low-ink warning soon after setup: Normal. The in-box setup cartridges hold less ink than retail HP 936 cartridges.

Faded or streaky output: Run the Print Quality Diagnostic from the touchscreen or HP Smart, then one printhead cleaning if needed. The printhead is a permanent part of the printer, so avoid running cleaning cycles back to back — each one uses ink.

Bottom Line

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e runs on HP 936, and the HP 936e EvoMore cartridges are the cheaper way to feed it per page. Settle the HP+ question first, buy EvoMore, and replace only the color that runs out.

Frequently Asked Questions

HP 936 or HP 936e?
Both fit the same slots. The 936e EvoMore holds about twice as much ink and costs less per page.

Is there an HP 936XL?
Not from HP. "936XL" listings are third-party cartridges.

Will HP 937 cartridges work?
Not in a US printer. HP 937 is the version sold outside North America, and HP regionalizes these cartridges.

Can I use third-party ink?
Only if HP+ was declined at setup.

Does using compatible or remanufactured cartridges void my warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your printer warranty only because you used third-party cartridges. Damage proven to be caused by a specific cartridge would not be covered, but the rest of the warranty still applies.
