What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8128e Use?

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 8128e uses four HP 923 cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The high-yield version is called HP 923e EvoMore; there is no 923XL. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured 923 cartridges that keep the original HP chip: Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and a 4-pack.

The 8128e is the Sam's Club version of HP's OfficeJet Pro 8120e/8130e series and takes the same ink as the 8125e, 8135e and 8139e. HP 924 and 925 are other regions' versions and won't fit, and the older HP 910 cartridges from the 8020 series don't fit either.

What OfficeJet Pro 8128e owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Is there an HP 923XL?

No. HP's high-yield version is the 923e EvoMore, rated at about 1,000 black or 800 color pages.

Can I use remanufactured cartridges in the 8128e?

If you turned on HP+ during setup, no: HP says HP+ printers need Original HP ink for the life of the printer. Without HP+, cartridges that keep the original HP chip, like ours, are the ones to buy.

Setup keeps saying a cartridge isn't communicating. What now?

The 8120e/8130e series needs its in-box SETUP cartridges to finish first-time setup. Wipe their contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, reseat them firmly and unplug the printer for a minute before trying again.

What's the difference between the 8128e and the 8128?

The 8128e is the HP+ version and the 8128 isn't; both take HP 923. Sam's Club sold both with a year of Instant Ink.

OfficeJet Pro 8128e quirks worth knowing

  • HP rates the series at 20 ISO pages a minute in black and 10 in color.
  • Sam's Club lists a 225-sheet tray, a 2.7-inch touchscreen, automatic two-sided printing and dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB.
  • HP+ printers need an HP account and a constant internet connection.
  • The document feeder scans one side at a time.
