About POS & Printer Ribbons

Impact printers push a nylon fabric ribbon against the paper, so the ribbon is the only consumable they need. Receipt and kitchen printers like the Epson TM-U220, cash registers built on Epson mechanisms, Verifone gas-station terminals, bank slip printers, dot-matrix forms printers and desktop printing calculators all take a ribbon cartridge or spool, and most of them have been in service for decades.

Color matters: black is standard for most printers, purple is the traditional cash-register color, and black/red two-color ribbons are for printers that print totals or negatives in red. The compatible-model list on each page tells you which cartridge your printer takes, and the "Don't mix these up" note covers the look-alikes (ERC-30, ERC-34 and ERC-38 are one cartridge; ERC-39 and ERC-43 are one cartridge; the TM-H6000 needs both an ERC-32 and an endorsement ribbon).

Which ribbon does the Epson TM-U220 use?

The Epson ERC-38, which is the same cartridge as the ERC-30 and ERC-34. It also fits the TM-U200, U210, U230, U300, U325 and U375.

Which ribbon does a Verifone Ruby or Sapphire system use?

The Epson ERC-23, usually in black/red. The Verifone Printer 900 uses the same cartridge under the Verifone number CRM0023.

What ribbon does the Epson TM-H6000 take?

Two: the ERC-32 for the receipt and journal station, plus an endorsement ribbon for the back of checks: ERC-41 on the TM-H6000, H6000II and H6000III, or ERC-43 (ERC-39) on the H6000IV and later.

How do I know when to replace a ribbon?

Fabric ribbons fade gradually rather than stopping. Replace it when receipts or printouts become hard to read; a new ribbon will not fix faint print caused by a worn print head.

Do calculator ribbon spools fit every printing calculator?

Most desktop printing calculators from Canon, Sharp, Casio, Victor and Royal use the standard Group 24 half-inch twin spool. Some newer models take a drop-in cartridge instead, and ink-roller calculators use no ribbon at all, so check the product page list.
