Chips, Printer Messages & Installation
Installing: open the cartridge door on the front of the printer, press the empty cartridge in to release it and pull it straight out. Slide the new cartridge in with the label up until it locks, then close the door. The printer recognizes the cartridge and updates its ink level.
Non-HP supply messages: the printer may report a used or non-HP cartridge. Confirm on the control panel to keep printing. If the cartridge is not detected, reseat it and check the chip contacts are clean.
Firmware updates: HP firmware updates have been known to block non-HP chips. Turn off automatic updates in the printer's settings or HP Smart before you install, and see how to keep HP firmware updates from blocking your ink.
Printhead is permanent: PageWide printers have a fixed page-wide printhead. If a color looks faded after a new cartridge, run the printhead cleaning from the Support Tools menu.

Remanufactured vs. Compatible vs. Original
Original (OEM) cartridges are new from the printer brand and cost the most. Remanufactured cartridges, like this one, start as genuine original shells (including the original chip) that are cleaned, refilled with high-quality ink and print-tested, so they fit and communicate like the original at a fraction of the price. Compatible cartridges are built new by a third party with their own chip. Castle Ink sells remanufactured inkjet cartridges and compatible (newly manufactured) toner.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many pages does the HP 981X black print?
About 11,000 pages, based on HP's rating for the original L0R12A at roughly 5% coverage.
Do I have to replace all colors at once?
No. Each color is a separate cartridge, so replace only the one the printer reports as empty.
Will this void my printer warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer can't void your printer warranty just because you used a third-party or remanufactured supply. If a non-original supply directly caused damage, that specific repair might not be covered.
How long can I store it?
Store it sealed, at room temperature and out of direct sunlight, and use it within about 24 months for best results. Once opened, install it promptly.
When will my order ship?
Orders placed by 4 PM ET, Monday through Friday, ship the same business day from Long Island, NY, by USPS (2–5 business days). Expedited 1–2 day delivery is available at checkout, and shipping is free on orders over $50.
