Why there is no Castle Ink cartridge for this printer
We don't sell Epson 302 or 302XL. Epson says the XP-6100 is designed to work only with genuine Epson cartridges and that firmware updates keep it that way, and owners have reported non-Epson cartridges being rejected after an update. We would rather tell you that than sell you a cartridge that may stop working.
Buy genuine Epson 302XL. Epson rates the 302XL black (T302XL020) at about 550 pages and each 302XL color at about 650, against 250 and 300 for the standard cartridges. When we checked, Epson listed the 302XL black at $29.69 and the XL colors and XL photo black at $21.99 each, against $15.39 for any standard 302.

Should I buy Epson 302 or 302XL for the XP-6100?

Can I mix standard and XL cartridges?
Yes. Each cartridge is read separately, so any mix of 302 and 302XL works.
What other printers use Epson 302 ink?
Epson 302/302XL also fits the Expression Premium XP-6000. If you own more than one, a single stock of cartridges covers them all.
Will other Epson cartridges fit the XP-6100?
No. Epson 410 (XP-530/630/640/830/7100) and Epson 202 (XP-5100, WF-2860) are different cartridges and won't fit. Always match the number on your current cartridge.
Are compatible 302XL cartridges safe for the XP-6100?
They are a gamble on this model. Epson says the XP-6100 is designed for genuine Epson cartridges only and that its firmware updates keep it "operating as designed." How do I replace the ink in the XP-6100?
Turn the printer on and lift the scanner unit. When the carriage stops, squeeze the tab on the empty cartridge and lift it out. Shake the new cartridge gently, remove only the yellow tape, and press it into its slot until it clicks. Close the scanner unit and let the printer charge the ink. Why won't the XP-6100 recognize a cartridge?
Reseat it firmly until it clicks, make sure the yellow tape is fully removed, and wipe the chip with a dry lint-free cloth. Turn the printer off for a minute. Why are prints from my XP-6100 faded, streaky, or blurry?

Why does the color ink go down when I only print in black?
Epson says the print head is kept primed with every color, so a little of each is used even on black-only jobs. Once a color cartridge is expended you have to replace it before the printer will print again, even in black.
Can I still scan if a cartridge is empty?
Yes. Scanning still works with an expended cartridge. If a cartridge is removed altogether, though, the printer won't print, copy, scan or read a memory card.
Can it print directly on CDs and DVDs?
Yes, on inkjet-printable discs, using the CD/DVD tray that comes with it.
Does it print on both sides automatically?
Yes. Epson rates two-sided printing at 5.5 pages per minute in black and 4.5 in color.
Why won't it print until I pull out the output tray?
A few owners have run into this. The output tray has to be pulled out by hand before printing, so check it first when a job won't start.
XP-6100 quirks worth knowing
- It has a maintenance box you can replace yourself. It sits behind a screw-fastened cover: pull out the lower cassette and raise the control panel to reach it, and don't touch the green chip on the box.
- There is a separate 20-sheet photo tray as well as the 100-sheet plain-paper cassette, so you don't have to swap paper to print a photo.
- It prints without a computer from an SD card, a USB drive or a PictBridge camera. Epson doesn't include a USB cable in the box.
- The 2.4-inch screen is not a touchscreen. Epson points buyers who want one to the XP-7100.
