What Ink Does the Epson Stylus Photo 1400 Use?

Quick answer: The Epson Stylus Photo 1400 uses six Epson 79 cartridges: black, cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan and light magenta. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured Epson 79 Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan and Light Magenta, plus a 6-color set.

In the U.S., the only other printer that takes Epson 79 is the Epson Artisan 1430, which replaced the 1400 and added Wi-Fi. In Europe the 1400 takes region-coded versions (T0791 to T0796) that aren't meant for U.S. printers, so buy cartridges sold for North America.

What Stylus Photo 1400 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in Epson's user guide, reviews and owner forums, answered in our words.

Can I print with just black if a color runs out?

No. Epson's guide says the 1400 won't print with any cartridge expended, even if the others have ink. If the ink light stays on after a swap, press each cartridge down until it clicks.

The paper and ink lights are both flashing red.

Turn it off, clear any paper or objects near the print head and restart. If it keeps happening on a well-used printer, the waste ink pad counter is often full, which needs Epson service.

Can I connect it over Wi-Fi or Ethernet?

No. It has USB 2.0 and a PictBridge camera port only. You'd need an external print server to share it. The Artisan 1430 added Wi-Fi.

Will Artisan 1430 ink fit?

Yes. Both use the same six Epson 79 cartridges, T079120 to T079620.

Stylus Photo 1400 quirks worth knowing

  • It prints borderless from 4x6 up to 13 x 19 inches, plus 12 x 12, but it doesn't take roll paper.
  • It's slow for text. Trusted Reviews measured about 2.5 pages a minute in black, and Photography Blog timed a borderless 8x10 at about two minutes.
  • It prints on inkjet-printable CDs and DVDs with the included tray. Take paper out of the feeder before CD printing.
  • Reviewers noticed a slight color cast in black-and-white prints that profiling can't fully remove. It comes from the dye ink set.
