What Ink Does the HP DeskJet 1056 Use?

Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 1056 all-in-one (J410a) uses two HP 61 cartridges: one black and one tri-color. The high-yield HP 61XL versions fit too, including HP's new July 2026 part numbers, C0PA4AN and C0PA5AN. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured 61XL Black, 61XL Tri-color and a 61XL combo pack.

It's part of HP's DeskJet 1050 (J410) series and takes the same ink as the DeskJet 1051, 1000 and 2050. European J410 models take HP 301 cartridges, which won't fit a U.S. printer.

In July 2026 HP added new HP 61 part numbers. The new 61XL black, C0PA4AN, is rated at about 360 pages, fewer than the older CH563WN. The new tri-color, C0PA5AN, is rated at about 200 pages, and Staples lists the DeskJet 1050 and 1056 as compatible. HP's older tri-colors, CH562WN and the 61XL CH564WN, were out of stock at Staples, and we found no new 61XL tri-color.

Is HP 61XL Worth It?

Yes. On October 15, 2026, Staples listed HP's new 61XL black C0PA4AN at $49.99 (about 13.9¢ a page), the older 430-page CH563WN at $64.89 and the new 61 tri-color at $52.99. The new 61XL black and tri-color 2-pack was $104.49. Our remanufactured 61XL black is $23.95 (about 5.6¢ a page) and the 300-page tri-color $24.95, or $35.99 for the combo pack.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP DeskJet 1056?

Turn the printer on and open the front cartridge access door. Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
Press down on the old cartridge to release it and pull it out toward you. Tri-color goes on the left, black on the right.
Unpack the new HP 61 and pull off the plastic tape over the nozzles.
Slide the cartridge into its slot, nozzles first and contacts facing the printer, and push until it clicks.
Close the door. When the alignment page prints, place it face down on the scanner glass and press the scan or copy button.

A cartridge light is blinking. What does it mean?

A cartridge is missing, still taped, very low, faulty or not seated. Pull off any tape, reseat or replace the cartridge, and use a genuine or properly chipped HP 61.

Either the cartridge door is open or the carriage has stalled. Close the door, clear any jammed paper from the carriage path and press any button except Cancel.

The HP 61 tri-color CH562WN is out of stock. What do I buy?

HP's new C0PA5AN tri-color is rated at about 200 pages and Staples lists it for the DeskJet 1056. A remanufactured 61XL tri-color, like ours, prints about 300.

Can it print over Wi-Fi?

No. The DeskJet 1056 connects by USB only. You can share it from a computer on your network.
