What Ink Does the HP DeskJet 1000 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 1000 (the J110 series) uses HP 61 cartridges — 61 black (CH561WN) and 61 tri-color (CH562WN) — or the high-yield HP 61XL black (CH563WN) and tri-color (CH564WN).
Two warnings before you order. It is not HP 60, despite how often the two get mixed up. And the modern DeskJet 1255 is a different printer that uses HP 67 — if you have a recent machine rather than an early-2010s one, check the model number on the front before buying.
2026 change: In July 2026 HP refreshed the HP 61 line. The new cartridges are a high-yield black (C0PA4AN, about 360 pages) and a single HP 61 tri-color (C0PA5AN, about 200 pages). There is no longer a separate XL tri-color. HP says the new cartridges work in the same printers as before. The earlier CH561WN–CH564WN cartridges, including the 61XL we remanufacture, still fit the DeskJet 1000.

A note on page yields, because HP has re-rated this family more than once. HP's later rating for the legacy 61XL is about 430 pages black and 300 tri-color (HP originally rated them at 480 and 330). The 2026 replacements are rated lower: about 360 pages for the C0PA4AN high-yield black and about 200 for the single C0PA5AN tri-color, which replaces both the standard and XL tri-color. HP 61 vs HP 60 — not interchangeable
This trips people up constantly, because the printers overlap in era and the cartridges look similar on a shelf.
- HP 61 / 61XL (CH561/CH562/CH563/CH564) fits the DeskJet 1000, 1010, 1050, 1051, 2050, 2540, 3050, and the ENVY 4500 / 5530 family, among others.
- HP 60 / 60XL (CC640/CC643) fits a different group — the DeskJet D2500 and F4200 series, ENVY 100 and 110, and Photosmart C4600 / C4700.
Buying by the printer model rather than by what looks familiar is the fix.
Before you buy ink: check the printer still works with your computer
This is the practical issue with a DeskJet 1000 in the 2020s, and it has nothing to do with cartridges.
The DeskJet 1000 is a USB-only printer from around 2010–2011. HP's own spec sheet lists support only for Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8, with no macOS version at all, and Windows 11 users generally end up on a generic or Windows Update-supplied driver rather than a full HP package. If you have inherited one or picked it up secondhand, confirm it installs and prints on the computer you intend to use before spending money on ink. If it works, the printer will keep going for years; if it does not, no cartridge fixes that.
How to replace the cartridges
- Turn the printer on and load a few sheets of plain paper.
- Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
- Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you and out. Black is on the right, tri-color on the left.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and pull the plastic tape off the copper contacts. Do not touch the contacts or the nozzles — skin oils there cause most "cartridge not recognized" errors.
- Slide the cartridge in at a slight upward angle and push forward until it snaps into place.
- Close the door and print an alignment page.
Troubleshooting a DeskJet 1000
- Cartridge not recognized. Clean the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, reseat firmly, and power the printer fully off and on. Check the tape came off completely.
- Missing colors or banding. The printhead is built into the HP 61 cartridge, so nozzle clogs travel with the cartridge. Run the cleaning routine once or twice; if gaps remain, the cartridge is finished.
- Dried out after a long gap. This is the most common fate of a lightly used DeskJet 1000. Print something in color every couple of weeks — it costs far less ink than the cleaning cycles needed to recover a badly dried cartridge.
- No wireless. Correct — the DeskJet 1000 is USB only. There is no network option, no HP Smart app setup and no Instant Ink. Because it never goes online, it can't receive firmware updates over the air.
- Prints only one side. There is no duplexer on this model.

About the HP DeskJet 1000 itself
The DeskJet 1000 (J110 series) is a compact, entry-level color inkjet printer only — no scanner, no copier. Connectivity is USB 2.0 only, two-sided printing is manual, and it uses the two-cartridge HP 61 system with the printhead built into each cartridge.
It dates from roughly 2010 and is long discontinued. Cartridges are still readily available, but the combination of small tanks and an ageing driver situation means it makes most sense as a light-duty backup rather than a main printer.

Can I connect it to Wi-Fi or print from my phone?
No. HP says the J110 series has no network connection and no wireless. It prints only from a computer over USB, and no USB cable comes in the box.
How much paper does the tray hold?
HP rates it at up to 50 sheets of plain paper, 20 photo sheets or 5 envelopes. The output tray holds 30 sheets.
Can it print borderless photos?
No. In Reviewed's testing an 8 x 10 print came out with about 0.4 in of white at the bottom. There is no borderless mode and no memory card slot.
Why is it so slow?
It is a basic printer. Reviewed measured about 1.1 pages per minute in Best mode, 2.4 in Normal and 5.6 in Fast Draft, with some banding in color areas in the faster modes.
DeskJet 1000 quirks worth knowing
- The same J110 hardware takes different cartridges in different regions: HP 61 in North America, HP 301 in Western Europe, HP 122 in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and CIS, and HP 802 in China, India and Indonesia. An imported or secondhand unit may not take HP 61.
- There is no display. A single button doubles as the error light, so empty-cartridge and jam faults show only as blinking.
- The paper path is not flat, so heavy card stock and textured art paper are not a good fit.

Can I print with just the black cartridge?
