What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet 4635 Use?

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet 4635 uses HP 61 ink: one black and one tri-color cartridge. The high-yield HP 61XL Black and HP 61XL Tri-Color are rated for about 430 and 300 pages (HP originally rated them at 480 and 330). In July 2026 HP replaced them in stores with a high-yield black, C0PA4AN (about 360 pages), and a single tri-color, C0PA5AN (about 200 pages). Both generations fit.

2026 change: In July 2026 HP refreshed the HP 61 line. The new cartridges are a high-yield black, C0PA4AN (about 360 pages), and a single HP 61 tri-color, C0PA5AN (about 200 pages). There is no longer a separate XL tri-color. HP says the new cartridges work in the same printers as before. The earlier CH561WN–CH564WN cartridges, including the 61XL we remanufacture, still fit the OfficeJet 4635.

The OfficeJet 4635 is part of HP's OfficeJet 4630 series. The same HP 61 / 61XL cartridges also fit the OfficeJet 4630 and 4632, the Envy 4500 and 5530, and DeskJet 1000, 1010, 2540 and 3050 models.

We sell remanufactured versions of the earlier 61XL black and tri-color, plus a 61XL black and tri-color combo pack. They keep the original HP chip.

The OfficeJet 4635 is a compact wireless all-in-one with print, scan, copy and fax, a 35-sheet document feeder and automatic two-sided printing, aimed at home offices. Like other HP 61 printers, its printheads are built into the cartridges.

Do not confuse HP 61 with HP 62, HP 63 or HP 65. They look alike, but only HP 61 fits the OfficeJet 4635.

How to Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet 4635

  1. Turn the printer on and open the ink cartridge access door. Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
  2. Press down lightly on the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it up and out. The tri-color cartridge sits on the left, black on the right.
  3. Unwrap the new cartridge and pull off the plastic tape by its pink or orange tab. Do not touch the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.
  4. Slide the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle, contacts facing the printer, and push until it clicks into place.
  5. Close the access door. If the printer prints an alignment page, follow the prompts on the control panel or in HP Smart.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge problem" or "incompatible cartridge": Remove the cartridge, wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, check that all the tape is off, and reseat it until it clicks. If the message stays, our HP cartridge not recognized guide walks through every HP message in order.

Still "incompatible" after cleaning: Take one cartridge out and print with the other on its own (single-cartridge mode), then swap. If one cartridge fails on its own, replace that cartridge. If both fail, the problem is in the carriage, not the ink.

Streaks or missing colors: Run the printhead cleaning from the printer's Tools menu or the HP Smart app. Two cycles usually clear a clog; if not, the cartridge itself is the likely culprit, because the printhead is built into it.

Low-ink warning on a new cartridge: Remanufactured cartridges reuse original HP chips, so the ink gauge can read low or show "?" while the cartridge is full. Judge by print quality, not the gauge.

What OfficeJet 4635 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.

After an aftermarket 61XL ran dry, the printer says "incompatible cartridges," even with a new genuine HP 61. What can I try?

HP's support agent on its forum had the owner run the printer with one cartridge at a time to find out whether a cartridge or the carriage was at fault. In that thread the printer was out of warranty and HP's agent pointed to the printer itself and suggested an upgrade.

Can the 4635 keep printing with only one cartridge installed?

Yes. HP 61 printers have a single-cartridge mode, and HP's own support staff tell 4635 owners to use it. It works with only the black or only the tri-color installed, but print quality and speed drop.

Does the 4635 print on both sides automatically?

Yes. HP lists automatic two-sided printing as standard on the OfficeJet 4630 series, which includes the 4635.

How much paper and how many originals does it hold?

The document feeder takes 35 sheets. The main input tray holds 100 sheets, and the output tray 30.

Is there a newer model to replace it?

HP lists the OfficeJet 4630 series as discontinued and points to the DeskJet 4155e. That printer takes HP 67 cartridges, not HP 61, and it is an HP+ model with HP dynamic security.

OfficeJet 4635 quirks worth knowing

  • It has a real fax modem with 99-page memory and 99 speed dials, which is unusual for an HP 61 printer.
  • It is one of the few HP 61 machines with both automatic two-sided printing and a 35-sheet document feeder.
  • Networking is wireless only. HP lists 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and USB 2.0, with no Ethernet port.
  • The 4635 is a variant of the OfficeJet 4630 e-All-in-One, so HP lists its specs and supplies under the 4630. The printhead is built into each HP 61 cartridge, so a new cartridge also gives you a new printhead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the HP OfficeJet 4635 take HP 61 or HP 61XL?
Both fit the same slots. The XL cartridges simply hold more ink.

Is HP 61 discontinued?
No. In July 2026 HP refreshed the line instead: the earlier standard and XL cartridges are being retired and replaced by a high-yield black (C0PA4AN) and a single tri-color (C0PA5AN), which HP says fit the same printers. Remanufactured HP 61XL cartridges, including ours, are still available. See HP 61 vs HP 61XL.

Does using remanufactured ink void my warranty?
No. The U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act stops HP from voiding your warranty just because you used third-party cartridges. HP's support staff do say non-HP cartridges may not work, and they won't troubleshoot them for you.
