The HP Envy 5530 uses HP 61 and HP 61XL ink cartridges in black and tri-color. HP rates the 61XL cartridges at about 430 black pages and 300 color pages (it originally rated them at 480 and 330). In July 2026 HP replaced the 61XL pair with a new HP 61 High Yield Black (about 360 pages) and a single new HP 61 Tri-color (about 200 pages).

The 61XL Black and 61XL Tri-color are now end of life, replaced by a new HP 61 High Yield Black (C0PA4AN, about 360 pages) and a single new HP 61 Tri-color (C0PA5AN, about 200 pages). HP says the updated cartridges work in the same printers, with no new hardware or settings needed. Older HP 61 and 61XL cartridges still work in the ENVY 5530.

How to Replace Ink in the HP Envy 5530
- Power on the printer and open the front ink cartridge access door — the carriage will slide to the center.
- Press down lightly on the empty cartridge and pull it straight out toward you.
- Remove the new cartridge from its packaging and pull the orange plastic tab to remove the protective tape. Do not touch the copper contacts or ink nozzles.
- Slide the new cartridge into its slot (black on the right, tri-color on the left) until it clicks firmly in place.
- Close the access door. The printer will automatically align the new cartridge — follow the on-screen prompt to print an alignment page.
Troubleshooting Tips
Cartridge not recognized: Remove the cartridge, gently wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and reinsert it firmly. Restart the printer if the error persists.
Streaks or faded prints: Run the cartridge cleaning tool from the printer's touchscreen or HP's software. One or two cycles usually clears clogged nozzles.
"Incompatible cartridge" message: Owners report this even on cartridges that worked before. HP's fix on its forum is to reset the printer, clean the cartridge and carriage contacts with distilled water, and test each cartridge on its own to tell a cartridge fault from a printhead fault.
Low-ink alerts too early: HP's ink-level meter often warns well before a cartridge is empty. Keep printing until quality drops before swapping cartridges.
