How tri-color cartridges work: cyan, magenta and yellow share one housing. When any single color runs out the whole cartridge is finished, even with ink left in the other two. If you mostly print text, setting the driver to black-only or greyscale is the cheapest change you can make.
Two Different "HP 61XL" Cartridges Are on Shelves
HP now sells the 61 family under two part numbers, and they are not rated the same. The legacy CH563WN 61XL black is rated about 430 pages (HP originally rated it at 480). The 2026 C0PA4AN 61XL black is rated 360 pages, and the 2026 C0PA5AN HP 61 tri-color about 200.

HP's budget lines use nearly identical model numbers with different cartridges. ENVY 4500 series and DeskJet 2540 series use HP 61. ENVY 4520 and DeskJet 2130/3630 use HP 63, and DeskJet 2652 and 2755 use HP 65. In 2026 HP merged HP 63 and HP 65 into one HP 63/65 line, but none of those cartridges fit the ENVY 4501, and HP 61 does not fit those printers.

What does error 0xC4EB827F mean, and how do I clear it?
It is a system error usually tied to cartridge seating or a cartridge from the wrong region. Take both cartridges out, make sure the tape is off, put them back (tri-color left, black right), then run an alignment.
I brought cartridges from overseas and the printer rejects them.
HP region-locks this printer. In the Americas it takes HP 61. The same cartridge is sold as HP 301 in Western Europe, 122 in parts of the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, and 802 in China, India and Indonesia, and those do not work in a U.S. printer.
Can it print on both sides automatically?
Yes. Automatic two-sided printing is standard on the ENVY 4500 series.
