2026 change: In July 2026 HP retired the original HP 61 cartridges (CH561WN–CH564WN) and replaced them with refreshed ones: a high-yield black, C0PA4AN (about 360 pages), which HP calls New HP 61 High Yield Black, and a single HP 61 tri-color, C0PA5AN (about 200 pages). There is no longer a separate XL tri-color from HP. HP says the new cartridges work in existing printers with no settings changes, and Staples lists the ENVY 4502 as compatible. The earlier cartridges, including the 61XL we remanufacture, still fit the 4502.

How tri-color cartridges work: cyan, magenta and yellow share one housing. When any single color runs out the whole cartridge is finished, even with ink left in the other two. If you mostly print text, setting the driver to black-only or greyscale is the cheapest change you can make.
Old and New HP 61 Part Numbers
HP is not selling two HP 61 lines side by side. Its July 2026 cartridge update lists all four original HP 61 cartridges as end of life. The refreshed high-yield black, C0PA4AN, is rated about 360 pages, while the original CH563WN 61XL black is now listed at about 430 (HP's first rating was 480). The new C0PA5AN tri-color, about 200 pages, replaces both the standard and XL tri-color. Original-part cartridges are still on some shelves as leftover stock, and they still work in the 4502.

HP's budget lines use nearly identical model numbers with different cartridges. ENVY 4500 series and DeskJet 2540 series use HP 61. ENVY 4520 and DeskJet 2130/3630 use HP 63, and the DeskJet 2652 uses HP 65; since July 2026 HP sells both as a combined HP 63/65 line. The DeskJet 2755 uses HP 67. They are physically similar and electrically incompatible.
Is the ENVY 4502 Discontinued?
Yes. HP's discontinued ENVY 4500 product page now points shoppers to the ENVY 6055, which takes HP 67 cartridges rather than HP 61. HP 61 cartridges are still sold, under the refreshed 2026 part numbers.

Do the new 2026 HP 61 cartridges (C0PA4AN and C0PA5AN) fit the ENVY 4502?
Yes. Staples lists the ENVY 4502 as compatible with the new C0PA5AN tri-color, and Best Buy Canada lists the ENVY 4500–4505 for the C0PA4AN high-yield black. HP says the refreshed cartridges work in existing printers without changing any settings.
Which slot does each cartridge go in?
Lift the cartridge access door by the handles on both sides until it locks, then wait for the carriage to stop. The tri-color goes in the left slot and the black in the right, with the contacts facing the back.
I bought HP 301 cartridges overseas. Will they work in my U.S. ENVY 4502?
Don't count on it. HP region-codes this series: HP 61 is the cartridge for the Americas and Asia-Pacific, while HP 301, 122 and 802 are sold in other regions. Buy HP 61 for a U.S. printer.
The printer says there is a carriage jam, but nothing is stuck.
HP support's accepted answer on its forum: open the door and check the carriage slides freely, remove any paper scraps or leftover tape, unplug the printer for 60 seconds, reseat both cartridges and update the firmware.
What does error OXC4EB827F mean?
HP treats it as a general internal or ink-system failure. Its June 2026 support article for the ENVY 4502 says to reseat the cartridges first, then run Tools > Align Printer if no alignment page prints. HP also asks you to test with genuine cartridges while troubleshooting.
ENVY 4502 quirks worth knowing
- Because HP no longer makes an XL tri-color, the new HP tri-color (C0PA5AN) is rated for about 200 pages. A remanufactured 61XL tri-color (CH564WN) is rated for about 300.
- The paper tray is fixed in the base. Expert Reviews found the front panel can't be closed with full-size paper loaded.
- It prints two-sided automatically, but the scanner is a flatbed only, with no document feeder.
- Mac owners have struggled to find a driver for recent macOS versions. An HP Community volunteer's fix was to reset the macOS printing system, install HP's macOS driver package, then add the printer again in Printers settings.
