What Ink Does the HP DeskJet 1010 Use?

2026 change: In July 2026 HP refreshed the HP 61 line. The 61XL Black and 61XL Tri-color are now end of life, replaced by a new HP 61 High Yield Black (C0PA4AN, about 360 pages) and a single new HP 61 Tri-color (C0PA5AN, about 200 pages). There is no longer an XL tri-color. HP says the updated cartridges work in the same printers, with no new hardware or settings needed. Older HP 61 and 61XL cartridges still work in the DeskJet 1010.

How to Replace Ink in the HP DeskJet 1010
- Power on the printer and open the cartridge access door — the carriage will slide to the center.
- Press down on the empty cartridge and pull it forward out of its slot.
- Remove the new cartridge from packaging and peel the protective tape off the nozzles.
- Slide the cartridge into its color-coded slot and push up firmly until you hear a click.
- Close the access door. The next time you print, the HP software asks you to align the new cartridge.
Troubleshooting Tips
Cartridge not recognized. Make sure all the protective tape is off, wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and reinstall firmly.
Streaky prints. Print a diagnostic page first. If it shows streaks or gaps, open the HP printer software (Maintain Your Printer, then Device Services) and run Clean Ink Cartridges.
USB-only connection. The DeskJet 1010 is a USB printer with no built-in Wi-Fi — connect directly to your computer.
Paper jams. Fan the paper stack, keep it below the MAX line, and re-square the side guides snugly.

Can the DeskJet 1010 keep printing if one cartridge is empty or removed?
Yes. With one cartridge out it switches to single-cartridge mode. Put both cartridges back in and it leaves that mode.
How do I align or clean the cartridges when the printer has no screen?
Use the HP printer software: Maintain Your Printer, then the Device Services tab, then Align Ink Cartridges or Clean Ink Cartridges. HP suggests printing a diagnostic page first and cleaning only if it shows streaks or gaps.
Why does my DeskJet 1010 switch itself off?
Auto-Off is on by default and turns the printer off after 2 hours without use. You can change it in the printer software's Advanced Settings.
Can it print both sides automatically?
No. It does manual two-sided printing: the driver prints one side, then tells you how to reload the pages.
DeskJet 1010 quirks worth knowing
- There is no screen at all, just one power button with a light. A dim light means sleep, slow blinking means it is working and fast blinking means an error. Press the button once to carry on after a jam or empty tray; pressing it twice within two seconds turns the printer off.
- HP warns that switching it off at the wall or power strip, instead of with the On button, can let the cartridges dry out.
- A "single-cartridge mode" message with both cartridges installed usually means the protective tape is still on one of them.
- The tray takes 60 sheets in but holds only 25 printed pages out, so empty it during long jobs.
