What Ink Does the HP DeskJet 4200e Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said that if you decline HP+ the DeskJet 4200e becomes a standard printer that accepts third-party cartridges. HP dynamic security stays on either way: cartridges with non-HP or modified chips are blocked, and only cartridges with a new or reused HP chip are supported.

Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 4200e series uses HP 67 cartridges — 67 black (3YM56AN) and 67 tri-color (3YM55AN) — or the high-yield HP 67XL black (3YM57AN) and tri-color (3YM58AN). Two cartridges, same two slots, and the XL versions are the only ones that make economic sense.

The 4200e series covers the DeskJet 4220e, 4252e, 4255e and 4258e. They all take the same ink.

HP DeskJet 4200e ink at a glance

Two more things about what is in the box. The cartridges that ship with a new 4200e are setup cartridges, which hold less than the retail equivalents — so your first replacement arrives sooner than the yield table suggests. You may see an HP 67XXL mentioned online, but we could not confirm one as a U.S. product and HP does not list one for this series.

Read this before you enroll in HP+

The DeskJet 4200e is an HP+ printer, and this is the single most important thing to understand about it.

Accepting the HP+ offer at setup extends the warranty and adds bonus Instant Ink months. In exchange, the printer requires an HP account, a permanent internet connection, and Original HP cartridges for the life of the printer. Enrollment is effectively irreversible.

HP+ can only be declined during setup, and if you want to use anything other than Original HP ink, you should decline it. Declining HP+ does not switch off HP dynamic security, though. The printer still blocks cartridges with non-HP or modified chips, and a firmware update can block cartridges that worked before. Cartridges with a new or reused HP chip, such as our remanufactured HP 67XL, are the ones that work. If you have already enrolled, you are committed to Original HP for that machine.

How to replace the cartridges

1. Turn the printer on and load some plain paper — it will want to print an alignment page afterward.
2. Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
3. Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you and out. Black sits on the right, tri-color on the left.
4. Unwrap the new cartridge and pull the plastic tape off the copper contacts. Do not touch the contacts or the nozzles.
5. Slide the cartridge in at a slight upward angle, then push forward until it snaps into place.
6. Close the door and print the alignment page when prompted.

Troubleshooting a DeskJet 4200e

• "Cartridge problem" or an incompatible-cartridge message. On a new printer, check first for protective tape left on the cartridge. Then wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth, reseat until it clicks, and power-cycle. If the printer is enrolled in HP+, it refuses any non-HP cartridge. Without HP+, dynamic security still refuses cartridges with non-HP chips, and no amount of cleaning changes that.
• Missing colors or banding. The printhead is inside the HP 67 cartridge, so clogs travel with the cartridge. Run the clean-cartridge routine once or twice; if the gaps remain, replace the cartridge rather than servicing the printer.
• Cannot find the printer on Wi-Fi. The 4200e is 2.4 GHz only. If your router publishes a single SSID for both bands, or is 5 GHz-only, the printer will not join. This is the most common setup failure on the series.
• Only prints one side. Correct — the 4200e has manual duplex only.
• Ink disappears fast. Colored backgrounds and photos consume many times the ink of plain text, and the 67 family's tanks are small. XL cartridges roughly halve your cost per page.

About the HP DeskJet 4200e itself

The 4200e is a compact color inkjet all-in-one that prints, copies and scans. It runs at roughly 8.5 pages per minute in black and 5.5 in color, and — unusually for the price bracket — includes a 35-sheet automatic document feeder, which is the main reason to choose it over a 2800e-series model. Two-sided printing is manual. Connectivity is 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi plus USB, with AirPrint, Mopria and Chrome OS support.

RTINGS notes that the 4255e and 4252e replaced the DeskJet 4155e. HP still lists the 4255e on its online store.

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Setup fails with error EBS00P0010 and the printer won't join my Wi-Fi.

HP's fix is to power-cycle the printer, reset its network settings and make sure a 2.4 GHz network is available. The 4200e can't see 5 GHz networks at all.

How do I reset the network settings?

Hold the Wireless and Cancel (X) buttons together for about 3 seconds, until the power button blinks. Then run Wi-Fi setup again.

My new printer rejects the black cartridge during setup.

HP support's first check is protective tape still on the cartridge. If it is clean, wipe the contacts with distilled water on a lint-free cloth, reseat the cartridge and power-cycle the printer.

I turned on HP+ at setup. Can I undo it?

In practice, no. HP+ can only be skipped during setup, and HP Community experts say it can't be reversed. In return you get a 2-year warranty instead of 1 and 3 months of Instant Ink, but the printer needs an HP account, an internet connection and Original HP cartridges for life.

DeskJet 4200e quirks worth knowing

• HP rates it for up to 1,000 pages a month but recommends 100–300. It is built for light home use.
• There is no Ethernet port. It connects by 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or USB only.
• The input tray holds 60 sheets or up to 5 envelopes, and takes custom sizes from 3 x 5 in up to 8.5 x 14 in.

Can I use compatible ink in a DeskJet 4200e?

Is HP 67XL worth it over standard HP 67?
