What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet 7310 Use?

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet 7310 uses two cartridges: an HP 94 black and an HP 95 tri-color. The high-capacity HP 96 black and HP 97 tri-color fit the same slots. For photos you can swap the black for an HP 99 photo or HP 100 gray photo cartridge. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured HP 96 Black, HP 97 Tri-color, HP 94 Black, HP 95 Tri-color and HP 100 Gray Photo.

The 7310 and 7310xi take the same cartridges as the OfficeJet 7410, which HP launched at the same time. The OfficeJet H470 also takes the HP 94 black and HP 95 and 97 tri-colors. The European 7310 shipped with HP 339 black and HP 344 tri-color, so U.S. buyers should shop by the 94 to 97 numbers.

Discontinued. HP announced the OfficeJet 7310 alongside the 7410 in October 2004, and HP's community staff now say support is limited because of its age. Original HP 94, 95, 96 and 97 cartridges show as backordered or in-store only at some sellers, and the HP 99 and 100 photo cartridges are listed as discontinued.

These yields come from LD Products and Staples listings, not an HP page. The Economy cartridges are HP's lower-fill versions, and Staples showed both out of stock. The photo cartridges go in the black slot, so you swap them in and out by hand.

Are HP 96 and 97 Worth It?

Yes. On October 16, 2026, LD Products listed HP's 96 black at $52.99 (about 6.2¢ a page) and the 97 tri-color at $84.58 (about 15.1¢ a page), both backordered. Staples listed the smaller 94 black at $57.99 and the 95 tri-color at $72.99, in stores only. Our remanufactured HP 96 black and HP 97 tri-color are $12.95 each, or about 1.5¢ and 2.3¢ a page. The 96 + 97 combo is $25.99, and the 94 + 95 combo is $19.99.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet 7310?

  1. Turn the printer on and lift the print-carriage access door. Wait for the carriage to move into view and stop.
  2. Push down on the old cartridge, then pull it out of its stall (tri-color on the left, black, photo or gray on the right).
  3. Unpack the new cartridge and pull off the pink tape. Hold it by the sides and don't touch the copper contacts or the nozzles.
  4. Slide the cartridge in at a slight angle, then push it forward until it snaps into place.
  5. Close the access door and let the printer print and scan an alignment page.

Which Other Printers Use HP 94, 95, 96 and 97?

The OfficeJet 7410, 7410xi and 7310xi take the same set. The OfficeJet H470 takes the HP 94, 95 and 97. Seller listings also show these cartridges for the OfficeJet 6210 and 7210 series, the Photosmart 2610 and 2710, the PSC 1610 and 2350, and the DeskJet 5740, 5940 and 6940. Check the black number for older DeskJets, since some take the HP 96 but not the HP 94.

What OfficeJet 7310 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Can I use HP 96 and 97 instead of 94 and 95?

Yes. The HP 96 black and HP 97 tri-color are the high-capacity versions for the same two stalls.

It says 'Remove and check color cartridge.' What now?

The printer can't read the tri-color cartridge. Take it out, wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth and a little distilled water, let them dry and reseat it. If the message comes back, the cartridge itself has usually failed.

Does the OfficeJet 7310 have Wi-Fi?

Spec listings for the U.S. 7310 (Q5562A) show Ethernet and USB, not built-in Wi-Fi. Use an Ethernet cable to share it on a network. The 7410 is the model with wireless.

Will European HP 339 and 344 cartridges fit?

No. Those are the UK and European numbers for this model. U.S. units take HP 94 to 97, plus the optional 99 and 100.

OfficeJet 7310 quirks worth knowing

  • HP rated it at up to 30 pages a minute in black and 20 in color in draft mode. It predates ISO speed ratings, so real-world pages come out slower.
  • It has a 50-page document feeder and a legal-size flatbed, and retail spec listings show automatic two-sided printing.
  • There's a 2.5-inch color screen, memory card slots, PictBridge and color fax with 150 pages of fax memory.
  • It's heavy for a home printer at about 58 pounds. The standard tray holds 150 sheets, and an optional 250-sheet tray was sold separately.
