HP printer not printing black - 7 fixes

A surprising number of "my HP printer isn't printing black" calls aren't actually empty cartridge problems — they're clogged printheads, dried-out nozzles, or HP's notorious black-and-color interlock (HP printers refuse to print anything if even one cartridge reads empty, including the colors you don't think you need).

Work through these in order. The fix you need is almost always in the first three.

Fix 1 — Run the Built-In Print Head Cleaning

HP Smart → your printer → Printer Tools → Clean Print Heads. Run it twice (yes, twice — one cycle is rarely enough). If the printer has been sitting unused for a few weeks, see our printhead cleaning deep-dive for the manual method that uses warm distilled water and a microfiber cloth.

Fix 2 — Check Ink Levels Properly

HP Smart sometimes shows incorrect levels after a sleep cycle. Here's how to check ink levels on an HP using HP Smart, Windows, and Mac. If any cartridge reads "very low," HP will block the entire print job — you have to either replace it or override the warning. (Some HP firmware versions won't let you override at all.)

Fix 3 — Reset the Printer

Power off, unplug for 60 seconds, plug back in. This clears any soft errors in the printer's controller chip and forces a fresh ink level reading.

Fix 4 — Pull and Reseat Each Cartridge

Lift the lid, take each cartridge out, and gently wipe the gold contacts with a lint-free cloth (a microfiber cleaning cloth or even a clean cotton t-shirt works). Don't use paper towels — they leave fibers. Push each cartridge back in until you hear a click. Many "missing color" errors are simply dirty contacts.

Fix 5 — Check for the Protective Tape

It happens more often than you'd think — a brand-new cartridge with the orange or clear protective strip still on the nozzles. Pull the cartridge, look for any tape, peel it off, and reinstall.

Fix 6 — Print a Diagnostic Page

Settings → Reports → Print Quality Report (or Diagnostic Page on older models). The report prints color bars and text in each ink color. Missing or streaky color bars tell you exactly which cartridge is the culprit.

Fix 7 — Replace the Cartridge

If color #6 still has gaps, the cartridge is genuinely dry or the print head module on that color has failed. Castle Ink stocks the most-common HP cartridges at half the OEM price, with same-day U.S. shipping and a 1-year guarantee:
