What Ink Does the HP ENVY 6458e Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: the HP ENVY 6458e uses HP 67 ink — a black and a tri-color cartridge — with HP 67XL as the high-yield version. The XL is the only sensible buy for most people.
Two corrections worth making before you order. First, the 6458e is not the same as the newer ENVY 6155e or 6555e, which moved to HP 68 — if you own one of those, HP 67 will not fit. Second, HP 65 and HP 63 belong to the older DeskJet 2600 and 3700 generations and are keyed differently.
HP ENVY 6458e ink at a glance
| Cartridge | Family | Part Number | Approx. Yield |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black (standard) | HP 67 | 3YM56AN | ~120 pages |
| Tri-Color (standard) | HP 67 | 3YM55AN | ~100 pages |
| Black (high yield) | HP 67XL | 3YM57AN | ~240 pages |
| Tri-Color (high yield) | HP 67XL | 3YM58AN | ~200 pages |
Those yields are HP's own ISO figures and they are genuinely that low. A two-cartridge printer at this price is built to be cheap to buy rather than cheap to feed, which is exactly why the XL matters so much here: roughly twice the pages for nowhere near twice the price.
What about 67XXL?
Here is an honest answer you will not find on most sites. HP itself no longer sells a 67XXL in the United States — the genuine part is marked non-orderable in HP's US parts store, and HP's own ENVY 6000 and 6400 cartridge table for North America lists only 67 and 67XL. Almost every "67XXL" on sale here is a compatible or remanufactured cartridge rather than an HP one.
That is not a reason to avoid it. Castle Ink stocks a compatible 67XXL black at roughly 400 pages, which on a printer this thirsty is the best-value black you can fit. Just buy it knowing what it is.
Read this before you buy third-party ink
The "e" in 6458e marks an HP+ eligible machine. If you accepted HP+ at setup, HP requires Original HP cartridges to operate the printer and compatibles will not work; the printer also needs an active internet connection to print. If you declined HP+, third-party HP 67 works normally. Our guide to printers that do not lock you into OEM ink explains the difference, and using compatible ink does not otherwise void your warranty — that protection is written into US law.
Castle Ink recommendation
- HP 67XL Black (3YM57AN) — compatible high-yield
- HP 67XL Tri-Color (3YM58AN) — compatible high-yield
- HP 67XXL Black — compatible extra high yield
About the HP ENVY 6458e
The 6458e is a retail-channel version of HP's ENVY 6400e series, sold through Walmart and Sam's Club rather than HP.com. Its non-HP+ twin is the ENVY Pro 6458.
Print, scan and copy, with automatic two-sided printing, a 35-sheet document feeder and a 100-sheet input tray. Rated up to 10 ppm black. Connectivity is Wi-Fi and USB — there is no Ethernet — and fax is send-only through the mobile app rather than a real fax modem. The control panel is an illuminated button panel, not a touchscreen.
HP has effectively retired this model and points buyers at the ENVY 6555 instead. HP 67 remains widely made, so it is a machine to keep running rather than a dead end — but note that the 6555 uses HP 68, not 67, so a replacement printer means new cartridges.
Common problems on this model
E4 paper jam, including phantom jams
HP documents that jams on this series can be real or false. Press Cancel first and let the printer try to clear itself. If that fails, check three places: the cartridge access area, the input tray and cleanout area, and the document feeder. Then reset properly — power off, unplug, wait a full 60 seconds, reconnect. See our paper jam guide.
"Out of paper" with paper in the tray
Usually the pickup rollers. Reload the stack squarely, check nothing is obstructing the path, and clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth.
Printer shows offline
Restart printer, computer and router, then confirm the printer is joined to the same network name the computer uses. HP specifically recommends plugging the printer into a wall outlet rather than a power strip. Our Wi-Fi setup guide has the full walkthrough.
Streaky or missing lines
Run one printhead cleaning from HP Smart, print a test page, and run a second only if needed. A third cleaning rarely fixes what the second did not, and each one uses ink. See faded or streaky prints.
FAQ
What ink does the HP ENVY 6458e use?
HP 67 black and tri-color, or the high-yield HP 67XL versions.
Does the ENVY 6458e use HP 68?
No. HP 68 belongs to the newer ENVY 6100e and 6500e series — the 6155e and 6555e. The 6458e is an ENVY 6400e machine on HP 67.
Does it use HP 65 or HP 63?
No. Those fit the DeskJet 2600 and 3700 series and will not seat in this printer.
Is the 6458e the same as the ENVY Pro 6458?
Same hardware and same HP 67 ink. The "e" version is the HP+ bundle; the Pro 6458 is not enrolled.
Why does my 6458e say the cartridge is low so quickly?
Because a standard HP 67 really is only about 120 pages. Move to 67XL or the compatible 67XXL and the problem largely goes away.
