What Ink Does the HP ENVY Pro 6455 Use?

Quick answer: The HP ENVY Pro 6455 uses HP 67 ink: HP 67 Black (3YM56AN, about 120 pages) and HP 67 Tri-Color (3YM55AN, about 100 pages), or the high-yield HP 67XL Black (3YM57AN, about 240 pages) and 67XL Tri-Color (3YM58AN, about 200 pages). The Costco version, the ENVY Pro 6458, takes the same cartridges.

The Pro 6455 is the version without HP+, so unlike the later ENVY 6455e it is not locked to Original HP ink. It still checks cartridge chips, which matters if you buy non-HP ink (see below). Castle Ink sells remanufactured 67XL cartridges for it.

Yields are HP's ISO figures. The printer ships with HP 67 setup cartridges, and HP doesn't publish their yield. HP part numbers ending in AN are the U.S. versions; AA and AE numbers are for other regions.

What Does HP 67XL Cost per Page?

On October 26, 2026, Staples and Best Buy listed the Original HP 67XL Black at $35.89, and Staples had the 67XL Tri-Color at $36.89. That works out to about 15¢ a page for black and 18¢ for color. Our remanufactured 67XL Black is $32.95 and 67XL Tri-Color $34.95, or $59.95 for the pair. The standard HP 67 cartridges hold about half as much ink, so the XL is the better buy unless you print only a few pages a month.

Will Remanufactured HP 67XL Work in the Pro 6455?

Yes, with one caveat. HP says this family uses dynamic security: it blocks cartridges with non-HP chips, while cartridges that reuse an HP chip, which is what remanufactured cartridges do, are supported. A firmware update can still block a cartridge that worked before, so many owners turn off automatic updates. Because the Pro 6455 has no HP+, there is no lifetime Original-ink requirement. Read more in our guide to HP cartridge errors and dynamic security.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP ENVY Pro 6455?

  1. Turn the printer on; the carriage only moves to the access position when it has power.
  2. Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  3. Press down on the cartridge to release it, then pull it out toward you.
  4. Unwrap the new cartridge and pull off the plastic tape by its tab, without touching the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.
  5. Slide the cartridge into its slot (tri-color on the left, black on the right) and push until it snaps in.
  6. Close the door and let the printer print or scan its alignment page if it asks.

Which Other Printers Use HP 67?

Staples and Quill list HP 67 and 67XL for the HP DeskJet 2700 and 2800 series (including the 2755 and 2755e), the DeskJet 4100 and 4200 series, the DeskJet Plus 4100 series, the ENVY 6000 and 6400 series (including the 6052, 6055, 6452e and 6455e) and the ENVY Pro 6420, 6452, 6455 and 6458. The newer ENVY 6100e and 6500e printers use HP 68 instead, so check the number before you buy.

What ENVY Pro 6455 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support communities and owner reviews, answered in our words.

What's the difference between the ENVY Pro 6455, 6458 and 6455e?

The Pro 6455 is the original retail model without HP+. The Pro 6458 is the Costco version with the same listed specs. The ENVY 6455e is the later HP+ version; RTINGS treats it as the same printer bundled with HP+ and Instant Ink. All three use HP 67 and 67XL.

What does the E3 or E4 error mean?

An HP expert on HP's forum says it points to a carriage or paper jam. Press Cancel, clear any paper from the cartridge area, input tray and document feeder, then unplug the printer for 60 seconds.

My new cartridge isn't recognized. What should I try?

HP's advice is to reseat it in the right slot, wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water, power-cycle the printer for 60 seconds and update the firmware.

Does it have a screen?

No. It uses icon lights and a small number display for error codes, so you look codes up rather than reading a message.

Can it scan multi-page documents?

Yes. It has a 35-sheet automatic document feeder as well as the flatbed.

ENVY Pro 6455 quirks worth knowing

  • Naming is confusing: the ENVY Pro 6455 has no HP+, the ENVY 6455e (no "Pro") does, and the Pro 6452 and 6458 are store versions.
  • Its successor, the ENVY 6555e, uses HP 68, which does not fit the 6455.
  • It prints up to 10 pages a minute in black and 7 in color, with automatic two-sided printing and a 100-sheet tray.
  • HP's own spec pages disagree on its Wi-Fi standard (802.11ac in one field, b/g/n in another), so expect dual-band rather than relying on the exact label.
