Which Printers Use the Same Ink as the OfficeJet 8020?
HP 910/910XL cartridges fit HP's 8010/8020-series inkjets: the OfficeJet 8010, 8012, 8014, 8015, 8017, 8020, 8022, 8025, 8028 and 8035, and the OfficeJet Pro 8020, 8022, 8025, 8028 and 8035, including their "e" (HP+) versions. Look up any model in our find ink by printer directory.
What Is the Cheapest Ink for the OfficeJet 8020?
Remanufactured HP 910XL cartridges are the cheapest reliable option. HP's original 910XL black lists at about $57 and a full XL set runs roughly $130 or more, while Castle Ink's remanufactured 910XL 4-pack is $68.99, about 3–4 cents per black page. For a deeper cost breakdown, see cheapest ink for the 8020 series and Instant Ink vs. cartridges.
Should I Buy HP 910 or HP 910XL?
910XL. The XL black holds roughly two and a half to three times the ink of the standard 910 black, and XL colors hold more than twice as much, so your cost per page drops sharply and you replace cartridges less often.
How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet 8020?
- Turn the printer on and open the cartridge access door; wait for the carriage to stop.
- Press the front of the empty cartridge to release it and pull it out.
- Unwrap the new cartridge (don't touch the metal contacts) and slide it into the matching color slot until it clicks.
- Close the access door. The printer may print an alignment page.
Will Remanufactured Ink Work in the OfficeJet 8020?
Yes, if the cartridge keeps an original HP chip. HP says this series uses "dynamic security" to block cartridges with non-HP chips, and firmware updates can tighten those checks. That is why we sell an OEM-chip version of the 910XL; it is the one to buy for this printer. Turning off automatic firmware updates in the printer's settings or the HP Smart app lowers the risk further. And if the printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink, it only accepts subscription cartridges until you cancel. See how to stop HP firmware updates from blocking your ink. Using third-party ink does not void your warranty (here's why).
Why Does My OfficeJet 8020 Say the Cartridge Isn't Recognized?
Remove the cartridge, make sure all protective tape and caps are off, wipe the chip or copper contacts gently with a dry lint-free cloth, and reinstall until it clicks. Confirm the part number matches this printer, then restart. If the message started right after a firmware update, the update may be blocking cartridges with non-HP chips. Cartridges that keep the original HP chip are the ones that keep working. Full steps: ink cartridge not recognized.
How Do I Fix Streaky or Faded Prints on the OfficeJet 8020?
Open HP Smart (or the printer's Tools/Printer Maintenance menu) and run Clean Printhead, then print a quality report. One or two cycles usually clear minor clogs. See faded or streaky prints.
What Are the HP OfficeJet 8020's Key Features?
The OfficeJet 8020 is a wireless 4-in-1 (print, scan, copy, fax) with automatic two-sided printing, a 35-sheet automatic document feeder, a color touchscreen, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct, and AirPrint, Mopria and HP Smart support.
Is the OfficeJet 8020 Still Worth Using in 2026?
For current owners, yes. HP no longer sells the series new (HP's store marks the 8025e discontinued), but the 8010/8020 series is still common and HP 910/910XL cartridges are widely available and inexpensive in remanufactured form. If your model is an "e" version activated with HP+, it will only accept Original HP cartridges. Compare current models in our printer buying guide, or take the ~60-second PrinterIQ Finder quiz.

HP OfficeJet 8020 Ink FAQs
What ink does the HP OfficeJet 8020 use?
HP 910 or high-yield HP 910XL cartridges in black, cyan, magenta and yellow.
Is HP 910 the same as HP 912?
They are equivalent cartridges sold in different regions. U.S. printers use HP 910/910XL.
Can I print with only black ink?
All four cartridges must be installed. The printer keeps printing when a color is low, and you can print grayscale to save color, but an empty or missing cartridge will stop it.
Does the OfficeJet 8020 work with HP Instant Ink?
Yes, it's eligible. While enrolled it only accepts Instant Ink cartridges; see how Instant Ink works.
Are remanufactured cartridges safe for the OfficeJet 8020?
Yes, as long as they keep the original HP chip, because this printer's dynamic security rejects non-HP chips. See are compatible ink cartridges safe?

What OfficeJet 8020 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.
What does the "e" in OfficeJet Pro 8025e mean, and does it matter for ink?
The "e" models are HP+ printers. If HP+ was activated at setup, the printer needs an internet connection and accepts only Original HP cartridges for the rest of its life. In return HP gave perks like six months of Instant Ink and a longer warranty.
A brand-new cartridge was blocked for having a "non-HP chip." What now?
Owners have seen this even with boxed HP cartridges after a firmware update. A technician's advice is to power-cycle the printer, reseat the cartridge and clean its contacts. If the message comes back, the cartridge is probably faulty and should be replaced by the seller.
It stopped with a "Printhead Problem" error (event code 62.80.13).
HP's forum advice is to power-cycle, reseat the cartridges, clean the contacts and update the firmware. Be aware that a firmware update can also tighten the printer's cartridge checks, so if you use remanufactured ink, try the other steps first.
Can the document feeder scan both sides of a page?
No. Owners report the 35-sheet feeder is single-sided, so you flip two-sided originals and scan them again. Two-sided printing, on the other hand, is automatic.
Is there a bigger black cartridge than the 910XL?
HP made the 916XL black (3YL66AN), rated at about 1,500 pages, for the OfficeJet Pro 8025 and 8035. Resellers now list it as discontinued or on backorder, so the 910XL (about 720 pages for black) is the practical choice.
OfficeJet 8020 quirks worth knowing
- HP ships the printer with setup cartridges marked "910/912." HP 912 is the same cartridge sold outside the U.S., so a 912 label in the box is not a mistake.
- Our 910XL comes in two versions: one that keeps the original HP chip and one with a new chip. This printer uses HP dynamic security, which rejects non-HP chips, so buy the OEM-chip version for it.
- On the OfficeJet Pro 8025, HP lists a 225-sheet input tray, a 60-sheet output tray and a duty cycle of up to 20,000 pages a month.
- Owners' most common hardware complaint is the paper tray: jams, sometimes right at first setup, and a front cover that can drop open during a scan or copy.
