Drum vs. toner: what's the difference?

The toner cartridge holds the powder; the drum is the light-sensitive cylinder that picks it up and lays it on the paper. Many Brother, Dell, Lexmark, Konica Minolta and Okidata printers use a separate drum that lasts through several toner cartridges. Most HP and Canon desktop lasers build the drum into the toner cartridge, so they only need a drum listed here if your model uses a separate imaging drum.

How often should I replace my drum?

Drum life is rated in pages, typically 10,000 to 50,000 depending on the model. Your printer will usually show a "Replace Drum" or "Drum End Soon" message. Each listing shows the rated page yield and the exact printer models it fits.
