The Finder asks a short series of questions — what you print most, monthly volume, whether you need color, what matters most to you, must-have features, and where the machine will live — and returns ranked matches in about a minute. Every recommendation is backed by the CastleScore™, Castle Ink’s independent 0–100 printer rating, and every result links to the exact cartridges that printer takes, with real prices attached.

The data behind a single score
The CastleScore is what makes the Finder more than a quiz. Producing one score for one printer means reconciling evidence that no shopper — and honestly, no small editorial team — could read by hand:
- Thousands of verified owner reviews, aggregated across Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Staples, Target, and manufacturer sites, plus unfiltered discussion from Reddit and printer forums
- Independent expert testing from a dozen-plus lab and review outlets including RTINGS, Consumer Reports, PCMag, Wirecutter, Tom’s Guide, and TechRadar
- Real cost-per-page math, calculated from live OEM and compatible cartridge pricing, published page yields, and ink efficiency — drawn from Castle Ink’s own cartridge catalog
- Reliability signals mined from failure and service complaints in the review corpus, cross-referenced against duty cycles and warranty terms
- Manufacturer specifications for speed, connectivity, app quality, and setup

That evidence is compressed into six weighted pillars:
Laser printers are scored on adjusted weights that lean harder on reliability and expert consensus, reflecting how those machines are actually bought and used.
Critically, the whole model is recalculated every month. Sentiment shifts, cartridge prices move, new models ship, and a printer’s CastleScore moves with them — so a recommendation made in October reflects October’s reality, not a review written two years ago and never revisited.
How 20 printers made the cut
The 20 machines in the Finder aren’t Castle Ink’s catalog. They’re what survived the screen.
Every current inkjet and laser model from the major manufacturers — HP, Canon, Epson, Brother, Lexmark and the rest — enters the screening pool at the start of each monthly cycle. The overwhelming majority never reach a published CastleScore. Models are cut when:
- Owner evidence is too thin to separate signal from noise, or the review pool shows signs of manipulation
- The machine is discontinued, regionally limited, or unreliably in stock, so a recommendation would go stale within weeks
- Cartridge economics can’t be verified against real, current pricing and published yields — no verifiable cost-per-page, no score
- A better machine exists at the same price, which retires most of the field outright
What’s left is the survivor set.
