Epson Printer Not Printing? 10 Fixes Before You Call Support

Epson Expression home inkjet printer with four ink cartridges - troubleshooting Epson printer not printing

Epson printers are some of the most reliable inkjets you can buy — until the day they aren't. If yours has decided to stop printing, you're not alone: "Epson printer not printing" is one of the most searched printer problems on Google. The fix is usually quicker (and cheaper) than you'd think. Here are the 10 fixes our team uses, in order.

Why won't my Epson printer print?

Almost every Epson "not printing" problem falls into one of three buckets: the printer can't talk to your computer (connection issue), the printer can't talk to itself (driver, queue, or firmware issue), or the ink isn't reaching the page (clogged head or empty cartridge). Work through the list below from top to bottom — most users find the fix in the first five steps.

1. Confirm the printer is actually online

On the Epson's screen, check that it shows "Ready" rather than an error code or sleep state. Wake it up with any button press. If it's a wireless model, make sure the Wi-Fi icon is solid, not flashing — a flashing icon means it has lost the network. (If it shows offline on your computer specifically, jump over to our deep-dive: Why Is My Printer Offline? 12 Fixes That Actually Work.)

2. Restart the printer the right way

Don't just turn it off and back on quickly. Power the printer off, unplug it from the wall (not just the surge protector), wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power up. This resets the print engine and clears most temporary glitches.

3. Clear the print queue

A single stuck job will block every print that comes after it. On Windows, open Printers & scanners, click your Epson, open the queue, and cancel everything. On Mac, do the same from System Settings → Printers & Scanners. Then send a fresh test print.

4. Run a nozzle check and head clean

From the Epson's control panel or Epson Smart Panel app, run Setup → Maintenance → Nozzle Check. If the printed grid has gaps, run Head Cleaning. Wait 5 minutes between cleaning cycles so the ink can resettle. Two cycles will fix most clogs; three is the maximum before you should let the printer rest for an hour. Epson's official cleaning guide walks through the exact menu paths for each model.

5. Check ink (or EcoTank) levels — and refill if needed

If you're on a cartridge-based Epson (XP, WorkForce WF, Expression Home), low or expired cartridges will stop the printer cold. Replace any cartridge that shows empty. If you have an EcoTank, top up any ink tank that has dropped below the lower fill line — running tanks dry can introduce air into the lines and require a power cleaning cycle to recover. Browse compatible Epson ink cartridges for every popular model (232, 273, 220, 410, 502, 522 and more) at Castle Ink.

6. Reseat the cartridges or recheck EcoTank caps

For cartridge models, remove each cartridge, wipe the chip contacts with a dry cloth, and click them firmly back in. For EcoTanks, make sure every ink tank cap is fully closed — an open cap can break the vacuum seal the printer relies on to draw ink.

7. Update the printer driver and firmware

Go to epson.com/support, enter your exact model, and download the latest driver for your operating system. While you're there, check for a firmware update — Epson regularly releases firmware that fixes printing bugs introduced by Windows and macOS updates.

8. Reconnect Wi-Fi (for wireless models)

Press the Wi-Fi button on the printer and use Wi-Fi Setup → Wi-Fi Setup Wizard to rejoin your network. If your router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, connect the Epson to the 2.4 GHz band — most home Epson printers don't support 5 GHz.

9. Try a USB cable as a diagnostic

If Wi-Fi printing fails but USB works, the problem is your network (router, signal strength, IP conflict), not the printer. If USB also fails, the issue is in the driver, queue, or the printer itself.

10. Run a Power Cleaning (last resort)

If nozzle checks still show gaps after multiple regular cleanings, run a Power Cleaning from the Maintenance menu. This uses a lot of ink, so only run it once. Have full cartridges or filled tanks before starting.

When it's time for fresh cartridges

If your nozzle check is clean but prints are faded or streaky, your cartridge is simply running low. Wondering if the cost feels steep?
