Quick answer: what ink does the Epson Expression Home XP-2100 use?

In Australia and New Zealand, the Epson Expression Home XP-2100 uses four Epson 212 Claria Home cartridges: black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. UK and European XP-2100 units take Epson 603 cartridges instead. The XP-2100 was not sold in the U.S., so check where yours was bought before ordering. High-capacity Epson 212XL cartridges fit the same slots and roughly triple the page yield, so they're the better value for most people. Each color is a separate cartridge, so you only replace the one that runs out.

Common questions about Epson Expression Home XP-2100 ink

Should I buy Epson 212 or 212XL for the XP-2100?

212XL, unless you print only a few pages a month. The XL black is rated for about 500 pages versus 150 for standard, and XL colors about 430 versus 130, so the cost per page drops a lot. See Is XL ink actually worth it? Standard vs. XL with real numbers.

Can I mix standard and XL cartridges?

Yes. Each cartridge is read independently, so any mix of 212 and 212XL works. Many people run an XL black with standard colors.

What other printers use Epson 212 ink?

In the U.S., Epson lists 212/212XL for the Expression Home XP-4100 and XP-4105 and the WorkForce WF-2830 and WF-2850. In Australia, the XP-3100 takes it too. If you own two of these, one stock of cartridges covers both.

Is Epson 212 the same as Epson 220 or 232?

No. Epson 220 (WorkForce WF-2750/WF-2760) and Epson 232 (XP-4200/XP-4205) are different cartridges with different shapes and chips. They won't seat in a 212 printer.

Are compatible 212XL cartridges safe for the XP-2100?

Our 212XL cartridges are remanufactured from Epson shells. Know the cautions: Epson Australia says the XP-2100 is designed to work only with genuine Epson cartridges, and Epson says damage caused by non-genuine ink isn't covered by its warranty. Epson firmware updates have also been known to reject some third-party chips, so consider turning off automatic firmware updates. How do I replace the ink in the XP-2100?

Turn the printer on and lift the scanner unit. When the carriage stops, squeeze the tab on the empty cartridge and lift it out. Shake the new cartridge gently four or five times, remove only the yellow tape, and press it into its slot until it clicks. Close the scanner unit and let the printer charge the ink (about a minute). Why won't the XP-2100 recognize a cartridge?

Reseat the cartridge firmly until it clicks, make sure the yellow tape is fully removed, and wipe the chip with a dry lint-free cloth. Power the printer off for a minute. Can the XP-2100 print if a color cartridge is empty?

Usually not. Epson printers stop printing when any cartridge is expended. On some models and drivers you can temporarily print in black only on plain paper, but plan to replace the empty color soon. Keeping a spare black on hand avoids most downtime.

Why are my prints faded, streaky, or missing a color?

Run a nozzle check from the printer's Maintenance menu, then a head cleaning (up to two or three cycles, with a short rest between them). What does “Service Required” mean?

Does the XP-2100 print double-sided?

Not automatically. It supports manual two-sided printing: the driver prints one side, then prompts you to flip and reload the pages.

Does the XP-2100 scan and copy?

My XP-2100 came from the UK. Does it take 212 ink?

No. Epson UK lists the 603 and 603XL cartridges for the XP-2100. Epson 212/212XL is the Australia and New Zealand cartridge, so buy for the region where the printer was sold.

Does the XP-2100 have a screen?

No. Epson's spec sheet lists no display. You run it from its buttons, your computer, or Epson's apps.

How fast does it print?

Epson rates it at 8 pages per minute in black and 4 in color (ISO/IEC 24734). It is built for light home use.

Is a USB cable in the box?

No. Epson Australia says the cable is sold separately. The box does include a set of four standard 212 cartridges.

Is the XP-2100 still sold, and what replaced it?

Epson lists it as discontinued. Epson UK points buyers to the Expression Home XP-2150.

XP-2100 quirks worth knowing

  • The black is a pigment ink for sharp text, and the cyan, magenta and yellow are dye inks.
  • Borderless printing works only at 4 x 6, 5 x 7 and A4. It also takes DL, C6 and #10 envelopes.
  • It is very compact at 390 x 300 x 146 mm and 4.0 kg, with no memory-card slot or PictBridge port.
  • Epson's own figures for the paper tray differ by region: Epson Australia lists 50 sheets of plain paper, Epson UK lists 100.
