Discontinued. Epson no longer sells the WF-2830 and lists the WorkForce WF-2930 as its replacement. The WF-2930 takes Epson 232 cartridges, not 212.

Quick answer: what ink does the Epson WorkForce WF-2830 use?
The Epson WorkForce WF-2830 uses four Epson 212 Claria Home cartridges: black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. High-capacity Epson 212XL cartridges fit the same slots and roughly triple the page yield, so they're the better value for most people. Each color is a separate cartridge, so you only replace the one that runs out.

Common questions about Epson WorkForce WF-2830 ink
Should I buy Epson 212 or 212XL for the WF-2830?
212XL, unless you print only a few pages a month. The XL black is rated for about 500 pages versus 150 for standard, and XL colors about 350 versus 130, so the cost per page drops a lot. See Is XL ink actually worth it? Standard vs. XL with real numbers.
Can I mix standard and XL cartridges?
Yes. Each cartridge is read independently, so any mix of 212 and 212XL works. Many people run an XL black with standard colors.
What other printers use Epson 212 ink?
In the U.S., Epson lists 212/212XL for the WF-2830, the WorkForce WF-2850 and the Expression Home XP-4100 and XP-4105. If you own two of these, one stock of cartridges covers both. The XP-2100 and XP-3100 are not U.S. models: UK and European units take Epson 603 cartridges, and the XP-2100 sold in Australia and New Zealand takes Epson 212.
Is Epson 212 the same as Epson 220 or 232?
No. Epson 220 (WorkForce WF-2750/WF-2760) and Epson 232 (XP-4200/XP-4205) are different cartridges with different shapes and chips. They won't seat in a 212 printer.
Can I use non-Epson 212XL cartridges in the WF-2830?
Yes, with one caution. Epson says the printer is designed for Epson cartridges, and its FAQ for the XP-4100, which takes the same 212 cartridges, says non-genuine cartridges may stop being recognized after a firmware update. Turn off automatic firmware updates before you switch. Using non-Epson ink doesn't void your warranty under U.S. law. We sell remanufactured 212XL for this printer. How do I replace the ink in the WF-2830?
Turn the printer on and lift the scanner unit. When the carriage stops, squeeze the tab on the empty cartridge and lift it out. If it is a black cartridge, shake it four or five times before you unpack it. Epson says not to shake the color cartridges. Remove only the yellow tape and press the cartridge into its slot until it clicks. Close the scanner unit and let the printer charge the ink. That takes a few minutes, and Epson says not to turn the printer off while it is charging. Step-by-step: How to install an ink cartridge in an Epson printer.
Why won't the WF-2830 recognize a cartridge?
Reseat the cartridge firmly until it clicks, make sure the yellow tape is fully removed, and wipe the chip with a dry lint-free cloth. Power the printer off for a minute. If it still refuses a compatible cartridge after a recent firmware update, contact the seller for a replacement chip. More fixes: Printer says ink cartridge not recognized: how to fix it.
Can the WF-2830 print if a color cartridge is empty?
Usually not. Epson printers stop printing when any cartridge is expended. Epson's FAQ for 212-cartridge printers says you can print in black only for a short time: use plain paper, turn borderless printing off and select Black/Grayscale in the Epson driver. Plan to replace the empty color soon. Keeping a spare black on hand avoids most downtime.
Why are my prints faded, streaky, or missing a color?
Run a nozzle check from the printer's Maintenance menu, then a head cleaning (up to two or three cycles, with a short rest between them). If a color is still missing, let the printer sit a few hours and try again. Detailed fixes: Epson printer not printing color: the real fix and Why is my printer printing streaks?.
What happens when the waste ink fills up?
Cleaning cycles send ink into a waste container. On the WF-2830 that is a user-replaceable Ink Maintenance Box (part C9344), so when it fills you swap the box yourself. It isn't an ink cartridge problem. Older Epsons without a maintenance box show “Service Required” instead; see Epson “Service Required”: waste ink pad full.
Does the WF-2830 print double-sided and fax?
Yes. It has automatic 2-sided printing, a 30-sheet automatic document feeder, and color fax.
WF-2830 vs. WF-2850: what's the difference?
Both use Epson 212 ink and have auto duplex, a 30-sheet ADF, and fax. The WF-2850 has a larger 2.4" color display; the WF-2830 has a 1.44" screen.
Does the WF-2860 use the same ink?
No. Despite the similar name, the WF-2860 uses Epson 202 cartridges.

What WF-2830 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, Epson's support pages and owner reviews, answered in our words.
What replaced the WF-2830, and will my 212 cartridges carry over?
Epson marks the WF-2830 discontinued and lists the WorkForce WF-2930 as its replacement. The WF-2930 takes Epson 232 cartridges, so spare 212 cartridges won't fit it.
The first cartridges ran out fast. Is that normal?
It is a common complaint in Best Buy reviews, along with early low-ink warnings. The standard 212 is rated for only about 150 black pages and 130 per color. The 212XL is rated for about 500 black and 350 per color, so it lasts roughly three times as long.
Can it scan or copy both sides of a page automatically?
No. It prints and copies onto both sides of the paper automatically, but the 30-sheet document feeder reads one side only. Two-sided originals have to be flipped by hand.
Can I fax straight from my computer?
Yes. It supports PC Fax, and it sends color as well as black-and-white faxes over a 33.6 Kbps modem, with 100 pages of fax memory and 60 speed dials.
WF-2830 quirks worth knowing
- It has a user-replaceable Ink Maintenance Box (part C9344). When the box that collects waste ink from cleaning cycles fills up, you swap it yourself instead of sending the printer in for service.
- The paper tray holds only 100 sheets of plain paper (20 of glossy photo paper), but it accepts custom sheets up to 8.5 x 44 inches.
- There is no Ethernet port. It connects by Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), Wi-Fi Direct or USB.
- Epson's own product page disagrees with itself on specs: the overview says 10.3 / 4.5 pages per minute and a 1.4-inch screen, while the spec table says 10.0 / 5.0 ISO ppm and 1.44 inches.
