How to Fix HP OfficeJet 8610 With the Printer Error "There is a Problem with the Printer Ink System"
Last Updated:
Having issues getting your HP Officejet 8610 to work with the ink cartridges that you just installed? If you're getting the dreaded "There is a problem with the printer ink system...." printer error, here is our recommendation on how to fix — please try these in order:
- Full power reset. With the printer ON, unplug the power cord directly from the back of the printer (not the wall strip). Wait a full 60 seconds, plug it back in, and turn it on. This alone clears the error a surprising amount of the time.
- Re-seat the magenta cartridge and clean the chip. Open the cartridge door, pop out the magenta, and gently wipe the small gold/copper chip on the side with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water (avoid paper towels — they shed fibers). Let it air-dry for a minute, then push the cartridge firmly back in until you hear it click.
- Check your OTHER three cartridges. This is the step most customers miss. The 8610 will throw the same "ink system" error if any of the other three cartridges (black, cyan, yellow) has an older-revision chip that the printer's current firmware no longer accepts — even if those cartridges were working fine before you swapped the magenta. If any of your other cartridges are also refilled/aftermarket, that may actually be the cartridge causing the error, not the magenta one.
- Reseat the printhead. Unplug the printer, open the cartridge door, lift the silver carriage latch, lift the printhead out, then set it back in and close the latch firmly. Plug back in and power on. (HP's own support guide recommends doing this up to three times if needed.)
- Turn off automatic firmware updates so this doesn't happen again. On the printer: Setup → Printer Maintenance → Update the Printer → set Auto Update to OFF and Notify About Updates to NEVER.
