How Do Inkless Printers Work?

Quick answer: "Inkless" printers still have a consumable — they just move it into the paper. The dominant consumer technology is ZINK, where the color is embedded in the sheet and heat brings it out. They are pocket photo printers and label printers. None of them prints an ordinary 8.5 x 11 document, and per print they are far more expensive than an inkjet page.

ZINK: The Color Is in the Paper

ZINK stands for Zero Ink. In ZINK Holdings' own words it is a full-color printing system that eliminates the need for ink cartridges or ribbons, because all the color required for printing is embedded in the ZINK Paper itself. Canon, describing its IVY 2, calls them colorful dye-based crystals embedded inside the paper. The print head applies heat, the crystals develop, and the image appears.

There is no cartridge to buy. There is only paper — and the paper is where the cost is.

The Cost Nobody Puts on the Box

Take Canon's own pricing for IVY 2 paper: 20 sheets for $11.99, 50 for $29.99, 100 for $49.99 on sale from $59.99. That works out to roughly 50 to 60 cents per print — for a 2 x 3 inch photo.

Read that table the right way. A ZINK print is not competing with a printed page — it is competing with a photo print. But if you came to inkless printing hoping to stop buying ink, the arithmetic does not work out in your favor.

Direct Thermal: The Other Real Inkless Printer

Shipping label and receipt printers are the other genuinely ink-free category. Rollo describes it plainly: the printer heats the label, the label's heat-sensitive coating turns black, and the ink is in the label itself. Rollo's own line is that its printers use no ink cartridges, toner or ribbon, with nothing to refill or replace.

The trade-off is that the coating stays heat-sensitive after printing. Anything that applies heat, friction or strong light acts on it the same way the print head did, which is why direct thermal is used for labels and receipts rather than documents you need to keep.

Direct Thermal vs Thermal Transfer

One word: ribbon. Direct thermal has none and needs coated media. Thermal transfer uses a ribbon and melts pigment onto ordinary label stock, which gives a far more durable print. They are not interchangeable — as Rollo notes, thermal transfer labels need a ribbon, so they simply will not print on a direct thermal machine.

Dye-Sublimation Is Not Inkless

This is the most common mix-up, and it catches buyers in the store. Dye-sublimation photo printers consume a ribbon-and-paper set. Canon's SELPHY CP1500 manual lists its printing method as dye-sublimation thermal transfer and its ink colors as yellow, magenta and cyan. Canon calls the consumable an Ink and Paper Set. That is not zero ink by any definition.

Worth knowing before you buy: the Polaroid Hi-Print is dye-sublimation, not ZINK, and Polaroid's own product naming says so — its listings read "Dye-Sub Printer (Not ZINK compatible)." It takes an all-in-one ribbon-and-paper cartridge. Buying ZINK paper for one is a wasted order.

What They Cannot Do

Print a document. The size limits settle it: Canon's IVY 2 tops out at 2.0 x 3.0 inches, the SELPHY at postcard size, and Polaroid's Hi-Print line at 2x3, 3x3 and 4x6. A direct thermal machine like the Rollo is a 4 x 6 label device.

If the goal is to stop buying ink for everyday printing, an inkless printer is not the answer — a refillable ink tank printer is much closer to it.
