How to Replace a Brother Toner Cartridge: Step-by-Step for All HL and MFC Models

What You'll Need

Replacing a toner cartridge on a Brother laser printer is one of the simplest printer maintenance tasks you'll do. The whole process takes under two minutes and requires no tools. You'll need:

  • The replacement toner cartridge (check your model number — see below)
  • A clean, flat surface
  • Optionally: a cloth or sheet of paper to set the old cartridge on (there may be small amounts of residual toner)

Important note for Brother printers: On most Brother laser models, the toner cartridge and drum unit are separate components. The toner is the powder-filled consumable you replace frequently (every 1,000–3,000 pages for standard yield, every 3,000–8,000 for high-yield). The drum unit lasts much longer — typically 12,000–30,000 pages — and is replaced separately. This guide covers toner cartridge replacement only.

Step 1: Find Your Brother Printer's Toner Cartridge Number

Before buying or installing a replacement, confirm the correct toner number for your model. Brother toner cartridges use a TN-XXX numbering system (e.g., TN-760, TN-660, TN-227). You can find your cartridge number:

  • On a sticker on the front or bottom of your printer
  • In the printer menu under Settings or Information
  • In the manual that came with the printer
  • By searching "[your printer model] toner cartridge" on Google or Amazon

If your model isn't listed, check the Brother USA product page or search your model on Amazon. You can find compatible toner cartridges for all Brother models on Amazon (compatible Brother toner) and at Castle Ink's full cartridge catalog.

Step 2: Open the Front Cover

Press the front cover release button — on most Brother models this is a small button or lever on the left or right side of the front panel. The front cover swings open toward you.

On some MFC models (like the MFC-L2710DW or MFC-L2750DW), the cover is a single-pull panel that lays flat. Either way, open it fully and lay it flat or hold it open with one hand.

The drum unit and toner cartridge assembly will be visible inside the printer as a single unit.

Step 3: Remove the Drum Unit and Toner Cartridge Together

Grip the green handle (on many models) or the sides of the drum unit/toner cartridge assembly and slide it straight out of the printer. Pull gently but firmly — it should slide out without resistance.

Important: Do not touch the green drum surface (the photosensitive cylinder). Oils from your hands can damage the drum. Hold the assembly by the sides or handle only.

Set the drum unit assembly on a flat surface covered with a sheet of paper — this protects your surface from any residual toner powder that may fall.

Step 4: Separate the Toner Cartridge from the Drum Unit

While holding the drum unit with one hand, push down on the green lock lever (or tab) on the left side of the assembly. This releases the toner cartridge from the drum.

With the other hand, pull the toner cartridge out of the drum unit by its handle. The toner cartridge is the smaller component; the drum unit is the larger grey cylinder housing.

Set the old toner cartridge aside. If you're going to recycle it, see our guide on How to Dispose of Toner Cartridges the Right Way for free take-back options from Brother, Staples, and Office Depot.

Step 5: Prepare the New Toner Cartridge

Unbox the new toner cartridge. Before installing it:

  1. Remove all packaging — there will be orange or yellow protective covers and a pull-tab or strip. Remove everything.
  2. Gently rock the cartridge side to side 5–6 times. This distributes the toner powder evenly inside before first use and helps you get a full-yield print from the start.
  3. Pull the sealing tab — there is typically a plastic or paper tab on the cartridge that seals the toner opening. Pull it straight out completely. If this tab is not removed, no toner will flow and you'll get blank pages.

Step 6: Insert the New Toner Cartridge into the Drum Unit

Slide the new toner cartridge into the drum unit housing. You'll hear or feel it click into place when it's fully seated. The toner cartridge and drum unit should fit together snugly with no gaps.

Make sure the cartridge is aligned properly — it should only go in one way. If it's not sliding in easily, check the alignment and try again. Don't force it.

Step 7: Reinstall the Drum Unit and Toner Cartridge Assembly

Slide the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the printer. Push it all the way in until it stops — it should sit flush with the front of the printer cavity. You may feel a slight click when fully seated.

Close the front cover firmly until you hear it click shut. The printer will power on its initialization cycle, which takes about 30–60 seconds as it warms up the fuser. During this time, the printer may display a "Please wait" message.

Step 8: Reset the Toner Counter (If Required)

On some Brother models, the printer will prompt you to confirm the toner replacement. If you see a message like "Replace Toner?" or "Did you replace toner cartridge?" on the LCD screen, select YES or confirm the replacement. This resets the toner page counter.

On other models, the counter resets automatically when the new cartridge is detected by the chip. If your printer displays a persistent "Replace Toner" warning after installing a new OEM cartridge, reset via:

  • Menu > All Settings > Machine Info > Reset Parts Life > Toner

For compatible (third-party) cartridges, the chip is usually pre-programmed to reset automatically on installation. If your printer still shows "low toner" after installing a compatible cartridge, try removing and reinserting it once, then power-cycling the printer.

Test Print

Once the printer has finished initializing, print a test page to confirm the new cartridge is working. On most Brother models:

  • Go to Menu > All Settings > Printer > Print Options > Test Print
  • Or print any document from your computer

The first few pages after a new cartridge installation may have slightly uneven toner as the powder settles into the new cartridge's feed mechanism. This is normal and resolves within 2–3 pages.

Saving Money on Brother Toner Cartridges

OEM Brother toner cartridges can be expensive, especially if you print frequently. Compatible toner cartridges offer the same page yield at 40–70% lower cost and do not void your printer warranty under U.S. law. Troubleshooting: After Replacing, Printer Still Shows "Replace Toner"

If your printer continues showing a toner warning after installation:

  • Confirm the toner cartridge clicked fully into the drum unit
  • Confirm the drum unit assembly is fully seated in the printer
  • Power cycle the printer completely (off, unplug, wait 30 seconds, plug back in)
  • For compatible cartridges: check the chip alignment on the cartridge — it should be flush and clean
  • Manually reset via Menu > All Settings > Machine Info > Reset Parts Life > Toner

Summary

Replacing a Brother toner cartridge takes less than two minutes: open the front cover, pull out the drum unit, release the old toner, insert the new one after removing all packaging and the sealing tab, reinsert the assembly, and close the cover. Done. The printer resets and is ready to print within about a minute.
