Ricoh Ri1000X Review: Specs, Price, and Is It Worth the Upgrade?

The Ricoh Ri1000 built a strong reputation as one of the best mid-tier DTG printers on the market, and the Ri1000X is Ricoh's refresh of that machine rather than a ground-up redesign. What's actually different from the original Ri1000

Ricoh states the Ri1000X prints roughly 15% faster than the original Ri1000, and backs that up with a redesigned 7-inch touchscreen, automatic (in addition to manual) table-height adjustment, and an improved white-printing mode aimed at reducing pinholing on tricky fabrics. A few smaller but genuinely useful changes: universal white cartridges that fit either white-ink slot, universal cleaning cartridges that work in all six ink slots instead of needing model-specific ones, a larger waste-ink bottle, and audible notifications when a print finishes. None of these are flashy, but they're exactly the kind of friction that adds up over months of daily production.

Specs that matter

The Ri1000X is built around Ricoh's genuine GH2220 piezoelectric printhead technology - four printheads, eight ink channels, 192 nozzles per channel. Resolution runs 600 to 1200 dpi, and a full-color 10" x 8" graphic on a light garment prints in about 28 seconds in speed mode or 42 seconds in fine mode. Maximum printable area is 19.6" x 16".

It runs genuine Ricoh water-based pigmented CMYK and white ink through a closed-loop delivery system with automatic white-ink circulation, which is the mechanism that keeps white ink from settling and clogging between jobs - historically the single biggest maintenance headache in DTG printing.

DTG and DTF from one machine

The Ri1000X isn't limited to garment printing - it also handles DTF transfer printing, so a shop that starts with cotton tees can expand into polyester and blended fabrics without buying a second printer. That flexibility is a meaningful part of the value case at this price point.

What's included and what it costs

The complete bundle includes the printer, RIP software, a standard platen, a full CMYK and white ink cartridge set, cleaning cartridges, pretreatment solution and sprayer, maintenance supplies, and virtual training and onboarding. Bundle options with additional platens or a DTF-ready package (heat station, transfer sheets, and powder included) are also available.

Is it worth the upgrade?

If you're buying new, the Ri1000X is the better buy over the original Ri1000 in basically every case - the speed and usability improvements don't cost you anything in print quality, and the running changes (universal cartridges especially) make daily operation noticeably less fussy. If you already own a working Ri1000, the upgrade case is weaker unless the pinhole/white-ink improvements or the added speed specifically solve a problem you're having.
