What Ink Does the HP DeskJet 2640 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 2640 uses two HP 65 cartridges: one black and one tri-color. The high-yield HP 65XL versions fit too. HP now sells a combined HP 63/65 line that replaces the HP 63XL and 65XL with the same printer compatibility, so those fit the 2640 as well. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured 65XL Black, 65XL Tri-color and a 65XL combo pack.
The 2640 is part of HP's DeskJet 2600 series and takes the same ink as the DeskJet 2622, 2652 and 2655. It's a regular DeskJet, not an Ink Advantage model; the Ink Advantage 2600 models are the 2675 to 2679. Older HP 63 cartridges, sold before the 63/65 line, don't fit.

Discontinued. The DeskJet 2640 (Y5H58A) is part of HP's DeskJet 2600 series, which HP no longer sells in the U.S. Staples now stocks only HP's newer 63/65 cartridges for it.

Our remanufactured 65XL black is $18.99 (about 6.3¢ a page) and the 300-page 65XL tri-color is $19.99, or $32.99 for the combo pack.
How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP DeskJet 2640?

- Unpack the new cartridge and pull off the plastic tape. Don't touch the copper contacts or nozzles.
- Slide the cartridge in at a slight upward angle, nozzles toward the printer, and push until it clicks.
- Close the door and print or scan the alignment page if asked.
Which Other Printers Use HP 65?
The DeskJet 2600, 2622, 2652 and 2655; the DeskJet 3700, 3752, 3755 and 3772; and the ENVY 5000, 5014, 5052 and 5055.
What DeskJet 2640 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer in HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.
What's the difference between HP 65 and the new HP 63/65?
HP's store says the new HP 63/65XL replaces both the HP 63XL and the HP 65XL and works in the same printers, so it fits the 2640. The 63/65XL black is rated at the same 300 pages as the 65XL.
Pages come out blank. What's wrong?
Check that the tape is off the nozzles, then run Clean Printheads from HP Smart. If a clean doesn't help, the cartridge has likely dried out or failed.
The lights blink and it won't print after a cartridge change.
The printer isn't recognizing a cartridge. Make sure both are fully seated, wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth and a little distilled water, check for paper scraps and unplug the printer for 60 seconds.
Why is it low on ink so soon after setup?
The cartridges that come in the box are lower-yield setup cartridges, so they run out sooner.
DeskJet 2640 quirks worth knowing
- HP rates it at 7.5 ISO pages a minute in black and 5.5 in color.
- It has Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz), Wi-Fi Direct and USB, and supports AirPrint and Chrome OS printing. There's no Ethernet.
- The input tray holds 60 sheets and the output tray holds 25. Two-sided printing is manual.
- It has a small icon display, not a touchscreen, and it doesn't print borderless.
