What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet 8010 Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide rated the HP 910XL at about 825 pages for black and for each color. HP's current pages rate it at about 720 pages for black and 700 for each color, tested in an OfficeJet 8010. It also said turning off firmware updates lets compatible ink work. That doesn't apply to a printer enrolled in HP+.
The HP OfficeJet 8010 uses HP 910 and HP 910XL ink cartridges — four individual tanks. It is the entry point of HP's OfficeJet 8000 range and shares ink with the 8012, 8014, 8015, 8018 and 8022.

One thing catches out a lot of OfficeJet 8010 owners: the HP 912 cartridge looks nearly identical and is sold widely online, but it is the European part number for this printer generation. A 912 will physically fit and then fail to chip-match a U.S. 8010. When you are buying, confirm the listing says 910 or 910XL.
Firmware and Non-HP Chip Warnings
HP ships firmware on this generation that can reject cartridges whose chip it does not recognise — a policy HP calls dynamic security. A cartridge that worked last month can start throwing a "Non-HP chip detected" or "Supply Problem" message after an automatic update, with no other change.
HP's product page says the printer is intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and that periodic firmware updates will keep it that way. That is why the remanufactured HP 910XL cartridges we sell keep the original HP chip. How to Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet 8010
- Turn the printer on — the carriage will not move to the access position if it is powered off.
- Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to slide to the centre and stop.
- Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you and out.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and peel off the protective tape. Do not touch the copper contacts or the nozzle plate.
- Slide the new cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle and press until it clicks firmly into place.
- Close the door and let the printer run its alignment page. Skipping alignment is the most common cause of banding people blame on the cartridge.
Troubleshooting the HP OfficeJet 8010
A cartridge that fits but reads as incompatible. Check the number: HP 912 is the European equivalent and will not authenticate in a U.S. OfficeJet 8010.
Colour missing after a long idle period. Run one printhead cleaning, wait, then a second. The 8010 uses a fixed printhead, so a dried nozzle is recoverable rather than fatal.
Print quality drops off after the printer sits unused. Print one colour page every couple of weeks. It costs almost nothing and it keeps the nozzles from drying, which is far cheaper than the deep cleaning cycles required to recover them.
The ink gauge reads low on a brand-new cartridge. Ink level reporting is an estimate, and on compatible cartridges it can read low, unknown, or not at all. Judge by print quality, not by the gauge.
Cartridges That Do Not Fit the HP OfficeJet 8010
These come up constantly in mistaken orders. None of them will work in an HP OfficeJet 8010:
- HP 902 / 902XL — OfficeJet 6950 / 6970 / 6978 series
- HP 952 / 952XL — OfficeJet Pro 8710 / 8720 / 8740 series
- HP 962 / 962XL — OfficeJet Pro 9010 / 9020 series
- HP 912 / 912XL — the European equivalent of the 910, which will not chip-match a U.S. printer

Can the OfficeJet 8010 send or receive faxes?
No. HP's specs for the series list print, copy and scan only. If you need fax, this isn't the printer for it.
I turned on HP+ during setup. Can I switch to non-HP ink later?
No. HP+ requires an HP account, an internet connection and Original HP ink for the life of the printer. HP+ can only be skipped during setup.
A 910XL listing says it won't work with HP+ or Instant Ink. Does that apply to me?
Only if your printer is enrolled in one of them. Sellers of third-party 910XL cartridges say so in their listings. If yours isn't enrolled, buy cartridges that carry an HP chip, such as remanufactured ones.
Can I plug it into my router or print from a USB stick?
No to both. It connects by dual-band Wi-Fi or a USB cable to a computer. There is no Ethernet port and no front USB port for flash drives.
Does it work with Windows 11?
Yes. HP lists the 8015e as Windows 11 compatible and recommends its HP Smart app.
OfficeJet 8010 quirks worth knowing
- Many sellers still list the 910XL at 825 pages. HP's own pages now say about 720 for black and 700 per color, so compare cartridges on the same basis.
- It has a 2.2-inch touchscreen, a 35-sheet document feeder and a 225-sheet tray, but no fax and no Ethernet. That is an unusual mix for an office-style printer.
- HP rates it for up to 20,000 pages a month. The output tray holds 60 sheets.
- The e versions (8010e, 8012e, 8014e, 8015e, 8022e) are sold with HP+. HP labels the 8015e a dynamic security printer that accepts only cartridges with a new or reused HP chip.
