Canon 137 Toner at a Glance

Consumable Part Number Page Yield Castle Ink option
Black Toner (one size) Canon 137 (9435B001) ~2,400 pages Compatible, $24.95

The yield is Canon's ISO/IEC 19752 rating at 5% coverage; Staples, Quill and On Time Supplies all list the same 2,400 pages. Our cartridge is a newly manufactured compatible.

What Does MF236n Toner Cost per Page?

About 1¢ per page with our compatible 137. Canon's original sells for $75 to $98 depending on the retailer, which works out to 3 to 4¢ a page, and Consumer Reports noted a $74 price when it tested this printer. A single-cartridge mono laser at 1¢ a page is about as cheap as home-office printing gets.

How to Replace the Toner

  1. Lift the scanner platform and open the toner cover.
  2. Pull the old cartridge straight out.
  3. Unbox the new 137, rock it gently five or six times, and pull the sealing tape out completely.
  4. Slide it in along the guides until it stops, close the cover and lower the scanner.

What imageCLASS MF236n owners ask

These come from owner reviews at Best Buy, Adorama and Amazon, toner reviews at Staples and CompAndSave, and Consumer Reports' listing, answered in our words.

Why does it say "non-Canon cartridge" with a genuine 137?

Several owners report this with both genuine and compatible toner. The usual cause is an expired or long-stored cartridge whose chip has aged out; check the date on the box, reseat the cartridge, and power-cycle. Our compatibles carry a fresh chip, and we replace any that misread under our 1-year guarantee.

Does the MF236n have Wi-Fi?

No. The "n" means network: it has Ethernet and USB only. One-star Best Buy reviews are mostly buyers who expected wireless; the MF232w and MF244dw are the Wi-Fi versions of the same engine. AirPrint and Mopria work over the wired network.

Why are my scans so pale?

The flatbed is the weak point: an Adorama owner called it not worth the irritation for desktop scanning. Raise the scan density in the driver and scan at 300 dpi; for documents it's adequate, for photos it isn't.

Is there a high-yield 137?

No. Canon makes one size at 2,400 pages, which is why the compatible price matters more here than on printers with XL options.

Can it print and copy two-sided?

It prints two-sided automatically. The 35-sheet document feeder scans one side only, so two-sided originals need a second pass.

imageCLASS MF236n quirks worth knowing

  • It prints and copies at 24 pages a minute, fast for its size, with a 250-sheet cassette plus a single-sheet bypass slot.
  • Fax is built in, which is rare at this price today.
  • Our compatible 137 has a 4.9-star average across more than 130 reviews at a competing supply site, so the aftermarket for this cartridge is mature.
  • A USB cable isn't included; most owners connect by Ethernet.
