How to Replace the Ink in a Canon Printer (PIXMA, MAXIFY & TS Series)

Replacing the ink in a Canon printer is quick and tool-free, but the steps differ slightly between PIXMA all-in-ones, MAXIFY office printers, and the popular TS series. This guide covers the universal Canon ink-replacement workflow so you can swap cartridges with confidence and get back to printing.

Identify Your Cartridge Type

Canon uses several cartridge families. The most common are PG/CL series (PG-243, CL-244, PG-245, CL-246, PG-275, CL-276), CLI/PGI tank-style cartridges (PGI-280, CLI-281), and the high-yield 240/241 line. Always match the number printed on the old cartridge to your new one.

Step 1: Power On and Open the Cover

Make sure the printer is turned on and idle. Lift the scanner unit or front access panel. The cartridge holder will move to the replacement position automatically. On TS series printers, it slides to the center; on MAXIFY models, it moves to the left.

Step 2: Remove the Empty Cartridge

Push down lightly on the tab on top of the empty cartridge until it clicks. Lift it straight up and out of the holder. Avoid touching the gold contacts or print head underneath.

Step 3: Prepare the New Cartridge

Remove the new cartridge from its package. Gently pull off the orange protective cap or tape covering the ink outlet. Do not shake the cartridge or touch the metal contacts.

Step 4: Insert the New Cartridge

Lower the new cartridge into the empty slot and press down firmly on the top tab until it clicks into place. The color label on the cartridge should match the color label in the holder (BK, C, M, Y, etc.).

Step 5: Close the Cover

Close the scanner unit or access panel. Your Canon printer will run a brief priming cycle and may print an alignment sheet. Place the alignment sheet on the scanner glass and follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.

Common Issues After Replacement

If the printer shows a Cartridge Not Recognized error, hold the Stop button for 5 seconds to bypass the warning, or remove the cartridge and reinstall it after wiping the contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth.
