Two wrong answers dominate search results for this model. The first is TN850 or TN880 with a DR820 drum — that is the previous HL-L5100/L5200/L6200 generation, and it is what most sites surface first. The second is a cartridge that exists but does not fit: TN920UXXL is NOT compatible with the HL-L5210DW. Brother's compatibility list for that 18,000-page cartridge covers models such as the HL-L5215DW, HL-L6210DW and HL-L6415DW, but not this one.

The drum yield is quoted at one page per job; print three pages per job and Brother rates the same DR920 at roughly 75,000 pages. Common problems on this model
"Replace Drum" but prints look fine
Brother counts drum rotations rather than inspecting the drum. If your pages are still clean, the drum may have life left. Replace the DR920 once you see repeating marks or grey background. Brother's user guide lists no drum-counter reset for this model: you just fit the new drum and close the front cover.
Vertical streaks down every page
Clean the corona wire before assuming the drum has failed. Slide the green tab on the drum assembly left and right a few times, then return it to the home position. This fixes a meaningful share of apparent drum faults for free.
Toner low warning too early
Brother warns well in advance. You can usually get several hundred more pages after the first warning — and gently rocking the cartridge side to side redistributes the remaining toner.
Won't print over the network after a router change

What is the TN920V?
A "value" high-yield version that Brother rates at 6,600 pages. It sits between the TN920XL (6,000) and TN920XXL (11,000). We don't sell it.
Can I add more paper trays?
Yes. Brother's optional LT-5505 (250 sheets) and LT-6505 (520 sheets) trays take total capacity up to 1,390 sheets.
Why am I not getting 48 pages a minute?
Brother's 48 ppm rating is for one-sided printing, and the printer ships with two-sided printing turned on by default. Change the default to one-sided if speed matters more than paper.
Will a Brother firmware update block compatible toner?
In March 2025 Louis Rossmann alleged that Brother firmware updates restrict third-party toner; Brother denied it. No block specific to this model has been documented. If you use compatible toner, turning off automatic firmware updates is a sensible precaution.
HL-L5210DW quirks worth knowing
- It has dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) plus Gigabit Ethernet, which is unusual on a print-only mono laser at this price.
- Besides the 250-sheet main tray there is a 100-sheet multipurpose tray that takes paper from 3 to 8.5 inches wide and up to 14 inches long.
- Brother quotes a maximum duty cycle of 90,000 pages a month but recommends up to 5,000. Plan around the second number.
- The same TN920 toner and DR920 drum fit the MFC-L5710DW, HL-L6210DW and HL-L6310DW. In the UK and Europe the same supplies are sold as TN-3600 and DR-3600.
