Can You Use a Regular Inkjet Printer for DTF Printing?

Quick answer: Not without modification. Standard inkjet printers (including the Epson and Canon models we cover throughout this blog) aren't built to handle the white ink DTF printing requires, since white ink particles are heavier and settle out, clogging print heads not designed for constant recirculation. Some hobbyists convert compatible Epson printers into dedicated DTF machines, but it voids your warranty and isn't reversible.

Why Regular Inkjets Struggle With DTF

Three issues come up constantly: white ink settles and clogs standard print heads within days without a recirculation system; DTF needs a white underbase layer printed first, then color on top, which stock printer firmware and software don't support; and PET film feeds differently than paper, so standard paper-feed mechanisms often jam or misfeed film.

Which Printers Can Be Converted?

Certain Epson models (particularly older L-series and workforce printers with piezoelectric print heads) are the most common conversion targets because their print head design tolerates aftermarket ink systems better than thermal inkjets from HP or Canon. Conversion kits typically replace the ink delivery system entirely and require a dedicated RIP software license — it's a real project, not a quick swap.

What This Means for Your Ink Cartridges

If you're converting a printer, you're taking it permanently out of normal ink cartridge use — it will no longer print with standard remanufactured cartridges once converted. If you're not ready for that step, keep your current printer for everyday printing and treat DTF as a separate, dedicated setup.

A Lower-Effort Alternative

If converting a printer sounds like more commitment than you want, you don't have to own a DTF printer at all to sell DTF apparel. You can order ready-to-press transfers from suppliers and just apply them with a heat press — see our guide to making DTF transfers at home for that route.

Ready to Buy a Dedicated DTF Printer Instead?

For most small businesses, a purpose-built DTF printer ends up being more reliable and less frustrating than a converted inkjet. See our Best DTF Printers for Small Businesses guide to compare entry-level and production-ready options.
