What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8035 Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide called this printer the OfficeJet 8035 and said it takes HP 902 or 902XL. It is the HP OfficeJet Pro 8035, and it takes HP 910 or 910XL, plus the optional HP 916XL black. HP 902 does not fit. The earlier version also said you can click OK past a "Non-HP cartridge" warning and keep printing. HP's dynamic security on this printer blocks cartridges with non-HP chips.

Quick answer: the HP OfficeJet Pro 8035 (sometimes listed as the OfficeJet 8035) uses HP 910 or HP 910XL ink: four separate cartridges in black, cyan, magenta and yellow. For heavy black printing there is also an extra-high-yield HP 916XL black. HP 902 does not fit this printer.

Ink Cartridges at a Glance

The HP 910 family is also used by the HP OfficeJet 8010, 8015, 8018 and 8022 and the OfficeJet Pro 8020, 8025, 8028 and 8035e, and several of their "e" versions. If you own more than one of these printers, you can stock a single cartridge family.

How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 8035

1. Power the printer on and open the front access door.
2. Wait for the carriage to slide to the center.
3. Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it straight out.
4. Remove the protective tape from the new cartridge and slide it into the matching color slot until it clicks.
5. Close the door.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge problem" alert: Reseat each cartridge and wipe the gold contacts with a lint-free cloth.

Streaky prints: Run the printhead cleaning tool from the printer's touchscreen or the HP Smart app. Repeat once if streaks persist.

Alignment off: After installing a new cartridge, print an alignment page from the printer's tools menu.

Cartridge rejected as non-HP: HP lists the OfficeJet Pro 8035 as a dynamic-security printer, meant to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, whether or not HP+ is on. Firmware updates can block cartridges with non-HP chips that worked before. Reseating won't fix that. A cartridge with an original HP chip will.

What OfficeJet Pro 8035 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Is there an HP OfficeJet 8035 without the "Pro"?

No. HP sells it as the OfficeJet Pro 8035 and the HP+ version, the 8035e. The non-Pro OfficeJet 8010 to 8022 models also take HP 910, but none of them is an 8035.

Will the HP 902 cartridges from my old OfficeJet Pro 6978 fit?

No. The 8035 replaced the 6978, but it takes HP 910 and 910XL (and 916XL black). HP 902 cartridges won't fit.

How many pages does a 910XL print?

HP now rates the 910XL black at about 720 pages and each 910XL color at about 700. Older listings still say 825. The 916XL black is rated for about 1,500 pages, about double a 910XL.

I never signed up for HP+. Can I use any 910 cartridge?

Not any. The non-e 8035 has no HP+, but HP's store page says it uses dynamic security to block cartridges with non-HP chips, and firmware updates can block ones that worked before. Remanufactured cartridges that reuse the original HP chip, like ours, are the safer choice.

Can it fax in color and connect by cable?

Yes. It has color fax with a 100-page memory and 99 speed dials, plus Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Ethernet and USB.

OfficeJet Pro 8035 quirks worth knowing

• It replaced the OfficeJet Pro 6978, which took HP 902. That is why HP 902 keeps turning up in searches for this printer, but it doesn't fit.
• In Europe the same printers take HP 912 instead of 910. A 912 bought from a UK or EU seller won't work in a U.S. unit.
• The setup cartridges in the box are rated for about 255 pages black and 270 color, well short of a 910XL.
• The 35-sheet document feeder scans one side only, though printing is automatically two-sided. HP rates it for up to 20,000 pages a month and recommends up to 800.

Can I use HP 910 standard and HP 910XL together?
Yes. You can mix yields across colors, for example an XL black with standard colors.

Does the OfficeJet Pro 8035 need a setup cartridge?
No, your replacement cartridges install directly. Setup ink is only used the first time you unbox a brand-new printer.

Do Castle Ink HP 910XL cartridges work with HP Instant Ink?
No. Instant Ink only works with HP cartridges enrolled in the program. Cancelling Instant Ink doesn't open the printer to any cartridge either: dynamic security still blocks cartridges with non-HP chips. If your printer is the 8035e and was enrolled in HP+, HP requires Original HP ink for the life of the printer.
