What Toner Does the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw Use?
Last Updated:Shopping for this printer? See all HP 206A & 206X Toner Cartridges – W2110A–W2113X → Ships same day by 4 PM ET, 1-year guarantee.
Quick answer: The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw uses HP 206A toner: HP 206A standard toner or HP 206X high-yield toner, one cartridge each in black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The 206A black is rated at about 1,350 pages and the 206X black at about 3,150 pages. The drum is built into each cartridge, so toner is the only supply you buy.
The M283cdw is the Costco-channel version of HP's M282–M285 color all-in-one family. It prints, copies, scans and faxes, has a 50-sheet document feeder and prints two-sided automatically. In Europe and the Middle East the same printer takes HP 207A/207X instead, so check the number if you bought it overseas. Castle Ink sells compatible 206A and 206X cartridges with chips.

Hard to find new. HP now lists the M283 series as discontinued and Costco shows the M283cdw as unavailable. HP 206A and 206X toner is still widely sold.

Yields are HP's ISO/IEC 19798 figures from its HP 206 toner page. HP's user guide for the M282–M285 series lists the same part numbers, and Staples names the MFP M283cdw on both its 206A and 206X listings. Note that magenta ends in 3 and yellow ends in 2, which trips people up when ordering by part number.
What Does M283cdw Toner Cost per Page?
On November 2, 2026, Staples listed HP's 206A black at $84.89 (about 6.3¢ a page) and the 206X black at $129.89 (about 4.1¢ a page). Our compatible 206A black is $49.95, about 3.7¢ a page, and the 206X black is $69.95, about 2.2¢ a page.
Color is where the high-yield cartridges pay off. A full-color page draws on all four cartridges, so with our 206A set a color page runs about 18¢, and with our 206X set it drops to about 12¢. If you print color regularly, go straight to the X cartridges.
Will Compatible Toner Work in the M283cdw?
Usually, but this printer has HP Dynamic Security. HP says the M283 series is intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and that firmware updates can block cartridges that worked before. That is why every 206A and 206X we sell carries a chip. If a non-HP cartridge is rejected, HP's own support agents point owners to two settings under Setup > System Setup > Supply Settings: turn off Cartridge Policy and Cartridge Protection. After HP's 2025 class-action settlement, HP also lets you decline firmware updates that include Dynamic Security, so say no when the printer offers one if your compatibles are working.
How Do I Replace the Toner in the M283cdw?
- Open the front door.
- Pull the toner drawer out by its blue handle.
- Lift the empty cartridge straight up and out.
- Unpack the new cartridge, pull the release tab and remove the packing material. Do not touch the green drum.
- Rock the cartridge gently end to end to spread the toner, set it in the slot whose color matches, then slide the drawer in and close the door.
If the printer says a cartridge is missing or incompatible right after a change, pull the drawer, reseat that cartridge firmly and make sure no orange packing is left on it.
Which Other Printers Use HP 206A and 206X?
The same cartridges fit the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw, MFP M283fdn, MFP M282nw, M255dw, M255dn and M255nw. The M283fdw is the retail twin of the M283cdw, so its guide is a good second read.
What M283cdw owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Does the M283cdw have fax?
Yes. Costco sold it as a print, copy, scan and fax machine, and it is part of HP's M283 fax family. Plug a phone line into the fax port on the back and run the fax setup from the touchscreen; HP's support community points M283cdw owners to the M282–M285 series fax guide.
Why did my new third-party toner stop working?
Most often a firmware update tightened the chip check. Turn off Cartridge Policy and Cartridge Protection in Supply Settings, decline future firmware updates, and if one cartridge still is not recognized, ask the seller for a replacement with a newer chip.
Can it scan both sides of a page automatically?
No. It prints two-sided automatically, but the document feeder scans and copies one side at a time. HP confirmed this in its answers to buyers' questions.
Will it print black only when a color runs out?
Do not count on it. HP's answer to buyers is that it may not print when a color cartridge is empty, so keep a spare of whichever color you use most.
M283cdw quirks worth knowing
- The product number is 7KW73A; the more common M283fdw is 7KW75A. Both take the same toner.
- Toner sold for Europe (HP 207A/207X) is region-locked and will show as incompatible in a US M283cdw.
- Some owners report light streaks or banding that a new cartridge cleared up, so try a fresh cartridge before booking a repair.
- An HP community thread reports the printer restarting during fax sends; a firmware update and a power cycle are HP's first steps.
