Why Is My Printer Not Printing At All? Complete Troubleshooting Guide
Last Updated:
When a printer suddenly stops printing, it's rarely broken for good. In our experience, the cause is almost always one of a handful of common culprits, and most of them take less than five minutes to fix. Work through the steps below in order before you assume the worst or call for support.
1. Check the Basics First
- Make sure the printer is powered on and not showing a blinking error light or a message on its display.
- Confirm it's connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer or phone, it's an easy thing to overlook after a router reset.
- Check that there's paper loaded and no jam or open cover warning.
2. Clear the Print Queue
A stuck print job can block everything behind it, even jobs sent from other devices in the house. Open your printer queue, cancel all pending jobs, and try printing a fresh test page before troubleshooting anything else.
3. Restart Printer, Computer, and Router
Turn the printer off at the power switch, not just standby, restart your computer, and power-cycle your router. It sounds too simple, but this clears the vast majority of connection glitches in one shot.
4. Update or Reinstall the Driver
An outdated or corrupted driver is a common, silent cause of print failures, especially right after a Windows or macOS update. Remove the printer from your device's list and reinstall the latest driver directly from the manufacturer's site rather than relying on a generic one.
5. Check for Low or Empty Ink
Some printers refuse every job when a single cartridge is empty, even for plain black-and-white pages. Replace low cartridges and try again. If a cartridge is the culprit, browse our compatible HP, Epson, and Canon ink and toner cartridges to get back up and running without paying full OEM price.
Still Not Printing?
If you've worked through every step above and it still won't cooperate, the issue might actually be a connection problem rather than a printing one. Our Wi-Fi and USB connection guide covers that separately, and if a jam is hiding deeper in the mechanism than it looks, our paper jam removal guide walks through it safely. PCMag's printer troubleshooting checklist is also a solid resource if you want a second set of steps to try.
If It's Time to Replace It
Prices and stock change often; as an Amazon Associate, Castle Ink earns from qualifying purchases.
If none of the above brings it back, especially on an older inkjet, a repair quote is often close to or more than the cost of a new printer. For a dependable replacement that's easy to set up and keeps running costs low, the Epson EcoTank ET-2980 (check price on Amazon) is our everyday pick, and our best all-in-one printer guide covers a few other options depending on your needs.
