Epson Maintenance Box: Where It Is, When to Replace It, and Which One You Need (T04D1, C9345, C9344)

An Epson maintenance box is a replaceable waste-ink container. It collects the ink the printer flushes during head cleanings and ink charging. When it fills, the printer stops and asks you to replace it. Most current EcoTank and WorkForce models use T04D1, wide-format and EcoTank Pro/Photo models use C9345, and several Expression Home and WorkForce cartridge printers use C9344. Some budget EcoTanks, like the ET-2800 and ET-2850, have no replaceable box and use internal pads instead.

Common questions

Where is the maintenance box on my Epson printer?

It's usually behind a small removable cover on the back or side of the printer, not inside the ink area. Your printer's error screen often shows an animation of where it is. On models with no box listed above, there's nothing to replace; the waste ink goes to internal pads.

How do I know it needs replacing?

The printer tells you. You'll see a message that the maintenance box is nearing the end of its life, then that it's full. When it's full, the printer stops printing and cleaning until you install a new one. Epson Printer Utility and the control panel also show its remaining capacity.

How do I replace it?

1. Wait until the printer isn't printing or cleaning.
2. Unpack the new box and keep the plastic bag.
3. Open the rear or side cover and pull the old box straight out, keeping it level so ink doesn't spill.
4. Seal the old box in the bag from the new one.
5. Insert the new box until it clicks and close the cover. The printer reads the new box's chip and clears the message automatically.

Do I need to reset anything after installing a new box?

No. The box has a chip, so the printer detects the new one on its own. Don't confuse this with ink-level resets on EcoTanks or with the waste-pad counter on printers without a box. See Epson “Service Required”: waste ink pad full.

Why does my maintenance box fill up so fast?

Frequent head cleanings and power cleanings are the main cause; each one flushes ink into the box. Running an EcoTank tank dry, which pulls air into the lines, also leads to heavy cleaning. My ET-2850 (or ET-2800) says “Service Required.” Can I buy a maintenance box?

No. Those models don't take a user-replaceable box. “Service Required” means the internal waste-ink pads are full. Your options are Epson service, a reset utility with caveats, or replacement. See Epson “Service Required”: waste ink pad full.

Is a compatible maintenance box OK to use?

Generally yes. Compatible boxes include a chip, and many owners use them without trouble. Pick one that lists your exact model, and be aware that a firmware update can occasionally reject third-party chips. See Printer firmware updates and third-party ink.

Can I empty and reuse the old box?

Not practically. The box is full of absorbent material and the chip records that it's full, so the printer won't accept it again. Dispose of the sealed box with household waste or through a printer-supply recycling program.
