What Ink Does the Canon PIXMA MP495 Use?

Quick answer: The Canon PIXMA MP495 uses two cartridges: a PG-210 black and a CL-211 tri-color. The high-yield PG-210XL and CL-211XL versions fit too. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured PG-210XL Black, CL-211XL Color and a combo pack.

The MP495 takes the same cartridges as its predecessor, the MP490, and the MP280, MP250 and MP480. In the UK and Europe it uses PG-510/CL-511 instead, which won't work in a U.S. printer.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the Canon PIXMA MP495?

  1. With the printer on, open the paper output tray and lift the scanning unit until the support holds it. The cartridge holder moves into the replacement position.
  2. Pinch the tabs to open the locking cover for the empty cartridge and lift it out.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge and gently peel off the orange protective tape. Don't touch the gold contacts or the nozzles.
  4. Put it in the correct slot (color on the left, black on the right) and push the locking cover down until it clicks.
  5. Lower the scanning unit gently and wait for the automatic head cleaning to finish. Align the print head if lines look off.

What PIXMA MP495 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in Canon's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.

It shows E13 or E16 after I changed a cartridge.

The printer can't detect the ink level, which is common with refilled or remanufactured cartridges. Hold Stop/Reset for at least five seconds to turn off ink-level detection and keep printing.

It shows 5B00 or P07.

The waste-ink absorber is full. Canon's fix is service, and owners report no reliable reset at home, so most replace the printer.

Why does it stop when the color is empty?

Both cartridges must be installed. Use the five-second Stop/Reset override to keep going on a low cartridge, or replace it.

How do I read error codes without a screen?

The single-digit display flashes letters and numbers in turn, such as E, 1, 3. Look the code up in the on-screen manual or on Canon's support site.

  • There's no memory card slot, no PictBridge and no fax.
