What Ink Does the HP DeskJet D4160 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP DeskJet D4160 uses two cartridges: a black and an HP 93 tri-color. For black, either the HP 98 or the smaller HP 92 fits. For photos you can swap the black for an optional HP 99 photo cartridge. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured HP 98 Black, HP 92 Black, HP 93 Tri-color, HP 99 Photo and a 92 + 93 combo pack.
It shares HP 92 and 93 with the Photosmart C3180 and the rest of the DeskJet D4100 series. There are no XL versions: the HP 98 is the higher-capacity black. The printer ships with an HP 98 and an HP 93 in the box. European D4160 units take region-coded cartridges with different numbers, so buy the U.S. WN part numbers below.

Is There an HP 93XL or 98XL?
No, so pick the HP 98 for black. How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP DeskJet D4160?
- Turn the printer on and lift the cover. Wait for the carriage to move to the center.
- Push the old cartridge down and slide it out of the cradle. Tri-color goes on the left, black or photo on the right.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and pull off the pink plastic tape. Don't touch the copper contacts or nozzles.
- Hold it with the copper strip toward the printer, slide it into the cradle and push it forward until it snaps in.
- Close the cover. Align the cartridges from the HP Toolbox if the printer asks.
Which Other Printers Use HP 92 and 93?

What DeskJet D4160 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer in HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Should I buy HP 92 or HP 98 black?
Either fits. The HP 98 prints about 420 pages against about 220 for the HP 92, so it's the better value.
Why is the yellow arrow light blinking?
It's often a faulty black cartridge, frequently a third-party or refilled one. On HP's forum, pulling the black cartridge stopped the blinking, and replacing it fixed the printer.
Colors look faded or one is missing.
One color in the HP 93 has run out or its nozzles are clogged. Run a cleaning from the HP Toolbox. If that doesn't help, replace the 93, because one empty color means the whole tri-color is done.
Can I print photos without a computer?
Yes. Plug a PictBridge camera, card reader or flash drive into the front USB port.

- It doesn't print on discs directly, but it supports HP CD/DVD Tattoo labels.
- It prints borderless photos from 4x6 up to panoramas, and six-ink photos with the HP 99.
