What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet 6310 Use?

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet 6310 All-in-One uses HP 98 black (about 420 pages) or the smaller HP 92 black (about 220 pages), plus HP 95 tri-color (about 330 pages). For photos you can swap the black for an HP 99 photo or HP 100 gray photo cartridge. Castle Ink stocks all five: HP 98, HP 92, HP 95, HP 99 and HP 100.

The same cartridges fit all three versions: the 6310 (Q8061A), 6310v (Q8063A) and 6310xi (Q8062A). One thing to watch: the higher-yield HP 94 black and HP 97 tri-color, which fit the OfficeJet 6210 and the OfficeJet H470, are not on the 6310's compatibility lists, so stick with 98 and 95.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet 6310?

  1. Make sure the printer is on, then open the print cartridge door. The carriage moves to the far right.
  2. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, then press down lightly on the cartridge to release it.
  3. Pull it toward you out of its slot: tri-color from the left, black or photo from the right.
  4. Unpack the new cartridge, holding only the black plastic, and remove the tape by its pink pull tab. Don't touch the copper contacts or nozzles.
  5. Slide it into the correct slot until it snaps, close the door, and run the alignment with plain white paper when the display asks.

Which Other Printers Use HP 98 and 95?

The DeskJet 6940, DeskJet 5940, Photosmart 2575, 8049 and C4180, and the OfficeJet H470 mobile printer all take HP 98 and HP 95. HP 99 and HP 100 photo cartridges fit many of the same printers.

What OfficeJet 6310 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support communities and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Can I use HP 94 or HP 97 in the 6310?

They aren't listed for it. Compatibility lists for the 6310 include HP 92 and 98 black and HP 95 tri-color only, while the HP 94 lists stop at the OfficeJet 6200 and 6210. Stick with 98 and 95.

Why won't the cartridges come out?

The printer has to be on when you open the cartridge door, or the carriage won't move to the release position. Wait for it to go quiet, then press down on the cartridge.

Is Q8063A the 6310?

Q8063A is the 6310v. Q8061A is the 6310 and Q8062A is the 6310xi. All three use the same cartridges and share one user guide.

How do I get six-ink photo prints?

Swap the black cartridge for an HP 99 photo cartridge. Store the black in a cartridge protector or an airtight container until you switch back.

What causes the "carriage jam" error with no paper stuck?

Usually the thin encoder strip behind the carriage is dirty or has come off its hook, or the rail is dry. Power off, check the strip is seated, and gently wipe it with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.

OfficeJet 6310 quirks worth knowing

  • The display prompts an alignment after every cartridge change, and alignment fails on colored paper.
  • It accepts both the HP 92 and HP 98 black, so check the number on your old cartridge before assuming you need the smaller one.
  • It has Ethernet and USB but no built-in Wi-Fi.
  • It is rated for up to 3,000 pages a month, with a 35-page document feeder and a 100-sheet tray.
