What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 6975 Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said compatible HP 902XL cartridges work in this printer because it is not an HP+ model. The 6970 series uses HP dynamic security and is designed to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip.

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 6975 uses HP 902 (standard) or HP 902XL (high-yield) ink in four separate cartridges — black, cyan, magenta and yellow. Castle Ink sells remanufactured HP 902XL cartridges and a remanufactured HP 906XL black, all with the original HP chip. Shipping is free in the U.S. on orders over $50.

The OfficeJet Pro 6975 is a home-office all-in-one with duplex printing, a document feeder and fax. It shares its ink with the whole HP 902 family — the 6950, 6954, 6958, 6960, 6962, 6968, 6970 and 6978 all take the same cartridges. HP has discontinued it. For the 6978, a sibling in the same series, HP points to the OfficeJet Pro 9015e as the newer model.

HP OfficeJet Pro 6975 Ink Cartridges at a Glance

Cartridge Color Approx. Yield
HP 902 (T6L98AN) Black ~300 pages
HP 902 (T6L86AN / T6L90AN / T6L94AN) Cyan / Magenta / Yellow ~315 pages each
HP 902XL (T6M14AN) Black up to 750 pages
HP 902XL (T6M02AN / T6M06AN / T6M10AN) Cyan / Magenta / Yellow up to 750 pages each
HP 906XL (T6M18AN) Black about 1,500 pages

Individual Colors Are a Real Advantage

Unlike HP's budget DeskJet and ENVY models, this printer uses four separate cartridges. You replace only the color that runs out, with no tri-color waste. It is the main reason cost per page on the OfficeJet Pro line is so much better than on the home models.

A Note on Published Yields

You will still see 825 pages quoted for HP 902XL black on older packaging and many reseller sites. HP's own current figure is 750 pages. We list HP's current numbers here.

The Printhead Is Built Into the Printer

Worth knowing before you stock up on ink: on this generation the printhead is part of the printer, not part of the cartridge. HP's support forums carry a steady run of 0xc19a0013 and 0xc19a0003 printhead failures on these models, and on a discontinued machine that is usually terminal. Two practical consequences: do not leave the printer unused for long stretches, and think twice before buying a large ink stock for an ageing unit.

New Chip or OEM Chip?

Remanufactured 902XL cartridges are sold with either a new third-party chip or the original HP chip. For this printer, buy the OEM Chip versions. HP says the 6970 series is designed to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and it rejects cartridges without one. The cartridges we recommend on this page all keep the original HP chip.

What OfficeJet Pro 6975 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Why does my 6975 show up as a 6970 in its settings and drivers?

The 6975 is part of the OfficeJet Pro 6970 series, and HP uses one driver and software set for the whole series. That is normal.

Why do my non-HP 902XL cartridges show a cartridge error?

The 6970 series uses HP dynamic security and only accepts cartridges with an original HP chip, new or reused. Owners report store-brand 902XL being refused too. Check that the cartridge keeps an original HP chip.

Can a firmware update turn dynamic security off?

Only on older units. HP's 2016 update removed it from 6970-series printers made before December 1, 2016; printers built after that keep it.

Can it scan both sides of a page automatically?

Yes. The 35-sheet document feeder scans two-sided originals.

OfficeJet Pro 6975 quirks worth knowing

  • The black slot also takes the black-only HP 906XL (T6M18AN), rated at about 1,500 pages, roughly double a 902XL black.
  • Whether dynamic security can be removed depends on build date, not model: only 6970-series units made before December 1, 2016 could get HP's firmware that disabled it.
  • Expert Reviews found the front USB port prints photos only, not PDFs or documents.
  • HP tests its standard HP 902 yields in the OfficeJet Pro 6860 series, not the 6970 series.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ink does the HP OfficeJet Pro 6975 use?
HP 902 or HP 902XL, in four separate cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The black slot also takes the HP 906XL.

How many pages does HP 902XL print?
Up to about 750 pages per cartridge on HP's current figures, against roughly 300–315 for standard HP 902.

Is there an HP 902XXL?
No. But HP lists the black-only HP 906XL (T6M18AN, about 1,500 pages) for this series. It fits the black slot and holds about twice as much as a 902XL black.

Which HP 902XL should I buy, New Chip or OEM Chip?
OEM Chip. The 6970 series uses HP dynamic security and is designed to accept only cartridges with a new or reused HP chip.

Do I have to replace all four cartridges at once?
No. Each color is separate, so you replace only what runs out.
