What Ink Does the HP PageWide Pro 577dw Use?

Quick answer: The HP PageWide Pro 577dw MFP uses four individual cartridges: HP 972A (black about 3,500 pages, each color about 3,000), the high-yield HP 972X (black about 10,000, each color about 7,000) and the extra-high-yield HP 976Y (black about 17,000, each color about 13,000).

The 976Y fits only the PageWide Pro 500 series (552dw, 577dw, 577z), not the 452 and 477. Castle Ink sells remanufactured 972X cartridges with reused HP chips in all four colors plus a 4-pack.

What Does PageWide Pro 577dw Ink Cost per Page?

On October 28, 2026, CDW listed HP's 972X black at $194.99 and LD Products had the 972X colors at $196.42 to $212.12 each: about 1.9¢ a black page and roughly 8.7¢ for a page using all three colors. The standard 972A black was $98.03 (2.8¢ a page) and the 976Y black $269.66 but backordered, with the 976Y magenta listed as discontinued. Our remanufactured 972X black is $53.99 (about 0.5¢ a page) and each 972X color is $52.99 (about 0.76¢ a page, or roughly 2.3¢ for a full-color page).

Will Remanufactured Ink Work?

Yes, if the cartridge carries an HP chip. HP's product page for the 577dw says the printer "is intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip" and uses dynamic security to block cartridges with a non-HP chip, adding that periodic firmware updates can block cartridges that previously worked. A reused HP chip is what makes remanufactured and refilled cartridges work, which is why our 972X cartridges are built on original HP chips. A 577dw owner who installed off-brand cartridges with clone chips found the printer simply stopped printing with no error on the panel, which is the dynamic-security behaviour in practice.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the PageWide Pro 577dw?

  1. With the printer on, open the cartridge access door on the front. The four large cartridges sit in color-labelled slots.
  2. Press the empty cartridge inward to release it, then pull it straight out.
  3. Unpack the new 972A, 972X or 976Y cartridge and remove all packaging; any plastic left on the contacts will trigger a replace-cartridge message.
  4. Hold the cartridge with the contacts facing the printer and slide it into the matching color slot until it clicks.
  5. Close the door and wait for the printer to recognise the cartridge and finish initialising.
  6. If the panel still reports a cartridge problem, unplug the printer for 15 seconds, plug it back in and retry; if a computer still shows it "out of ink", remove and re-add the printer in the OS.

Which Other Printers Use HP 972A and 972X?

The PageWide Pro 452dn, 452dw, 477dn, 477dw, 552dw and 577z take the same 972A and 972X cartridges; the 976Y extra-high-yield cartridges fit only the 552dw, 577dw and 577z. The PageWide Managed P55250dw and P57750dw are listed by some resellers as compatible but are not on HP's own list.

What PageWide Pro 577dw owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support communities and owner reviews, answered in our words.

I installed off-brand cartridges and the printer stopped printing with no error. What happened?

The firmware checks for an HP chip and may refuse non-HP chips silently, with the computer reporting "out of ink" while the panel shows nothing. Power-cycle the printer, make a black-and-white copy to confirm the hardware is fine, re-add the printer on your computer, and if it still refuses, switch to cartridges with a new or reused HP chip.

Why does it keep saying "replace the ink cartridge" after I fitted a new black?

Owners of the same-engine 477dw report this on HP's community. Check that no packaging remains on the contacts, confirm the cartridge is a 972A, 972X or 976Y, reseat it until it clicks and power-cycle; a defective cartridge is the remaining suspect.

Does using compatible cartridges void the warranty?

Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, using third-party supplies does not void a US warranty unless the manufacturer shows the supply caused the damage. Separately, HP's dynamic security can block non-HP chips, so remanufactured cartridges on a reused HP chip are the safer choice.

Is the 972X or 976Y worth it over the 972A?

Per page, yes. At current retail the 972A black runs about 2.8¢ a page, the 972X about 1.9¢ and the 976Y about 1.6¢, but the 976Y is backordered and one color is discontinued, so the 972X is the practical high-yield choice.

PageWide Pro 577dw quirks worth knowing

  • PageWide printing uses a fixed page-width print head and pigment ink, which is how it reaches 50 pages a minute with a 6-second first page.
  • Start-up takes about 36 seconds and the panel is touchscreen-only with no numeric keypad, so faxing takes more taps than on older OfficeJets.
  • A 2018 fax-path vulnerability affected fax-capable PageWide and OfficeJet models; HP patched it in firmware, so keep the printer updated if a phone line is connected.
  • Rated for 80,000 pages a month, with 1,000 to 6,000 recommended; it is overkill for a home office.
