What Ink Does the HP Photosmart 7760 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP Photosmart 7760 holds two cartridges at a time: an HP 57 tri-color on the left, and either an HP 58 photo or an HP 56 black on the right. Use the 57 + 58 for photos and swap in the 56 black for documents. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured HP 56 Black, HP 57 Tri-color, HP 58 Photo and a 56 + 57 combo pack.
HP sold the 7760 as a six-ink photo printer. It shipped with the tri-color and photo cartridges, and HP called the HP 56 black an optional upgrade for sharper, faster text. The 7760w and 7760v are retail versions that take the same cartridges. UK and European units use the same numbers with an AE or EE suffix instead of AN.

The HP 58 and HP 56 share the right-hand slot, so you swap them by hand. Some ink sellers also list the HP 59 gray photo cartridge for the 7760, but Staples doesn't, and we couldn't confirm it with HP or find a consistent yield. Yields are retailer-listed figures.
Are Original HP 56 and 57 Worth It?
Not at today's prices. On October 24, 2026, Staples listed HP's 56 black at $56.99 (about 11¢ a page) and the 57 tri-color at $98.99 (about 19.8¢ a page), both for in-store pickup only. 4inkjets had HP's 58 photo backordered. Our remanufactured HP 56 black is $12.99 (about 2.5¢ a page) and the HP 57 tri-color $17.99 (about 3.6¢ a page), or $26.99 for the combo pack. The HP 58 photo is $19.95.
How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP Photosmart 7760?
- Turn the printer on and lift the top cover. The cartridge cradle moves to the center.
- Raise the latch over the cartridge you're replacing and lift the old cartridge out.
- Unpack the new cartridge and pull off the pink tape over the nozzles. Don't touch the copper contacts.
- Slide it into its stall (HP 57 tri-color on the left; HP 56 black or HP 58 photo on the right) and close the latch until it clicks.
- Close the cover and print the alignment page if asked. Keep the cartridge you took out in an HP cartridge protector so it doesn't dry out.

What Photosmart 7760 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer in HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Do I need the HP 56 black cartridge?
Not for photos. HP calls it an optional upgrade for black text. It replaces the HP 58 photo cartridge in the right slot and more than doubles text speed in normal mode.
Can I print from a memory card without a computer?
Yes. It has slots for CompactFlash, SmartMedia, SD/MMC, Memory Stick and xD cards, and a 1.8-inch color screen to preview and pick photos.
Does it print two-sided automatically?
Only with HP's optional two-sided printing accessory, which was sold separately.
Can I use an HP 59 gray photo cartridge?
Some ink sellers list it for the 7760, but Staples doesn't, and we couldn't confirm it with HP. The HP 58 is the photo cartridge we can confirm.
Photosmart 7760 quirks worth knowing
- HP rated it at up to 13 pages a minute in black and 12 in color in draft mode with the cartridges in the box, and up to 21 and 16 with the HP 56 black. In normal mode, text goes from 3 to 7.7 pages a minute with the 56.
- Text printed with only the photo cartridge comes out pale. Tom's Hardware recommends buying the HP 56 if you print documents.
- Tom's Hardware rated its print quality well above Canon's i860, but found it two to three times slower and hungrier for ink.
- It has a flip-up 1.8-inch color screen, a 100-sheet input tray (a 250-sheet tray was optional) and a sensor that detects the paper type.
