What Toner Does the HP LaserJet 2200d Use?

Quick answer: The HP LaserJet 2200d uses the HP 96A (C4096A) black toner cartridge, rated at about 5,000 pages. It is the only toner HP made for the LaserJet 2100 and 2200 series, and the drum is built into it.

HP never made a high-yield "96X". Castle Ink sells a compatible 96A for $48.95.

What Does LaserJet 2200d Toner Cost per Page?

On November 2, 2026, 4inkjets listed HP's 96A at $101.99 and LD Products at $101.67: about 2¢ a page. Our compatible 96A is $48.95, about 1¢ a page.

Will Compatible Toner Work?

Yes. The 2200 series dates from 2001, long before HP's dynamic-security firmware, and we know of no firmware on it that checks the cartridge brand. Compatible and remanufactured 96A cartridges are the normal way owners keep these printers running. Remove the sealing tape fully before installing; a strip left in place gives blank or streaked pages.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the LaserJet 2200d?

  1. Open the top cover of the printer.
  2. Grip the old cartridge by its handle and lift it up and out.
  3. Unpack the new 96A and rock it gently side to side five or six times to spread the toner; do not touch the drum under the shutter.
  4. Pull the tab on the end of the cartridge to remove the full length of sealing tape.
  5. Slide the cartridge into the guides until it seats firmly.
  6. Close the top cover; the printer returns to Ready.

These are the standard steps for this type of printer. If your model's door label shows a different order, follow the label.

Which Other Printers Use HP 96A?

The LaserJet 2100, 2100m, 2100se, 2100tn and 2100xi, and the LaserJet 2200, 2200d, 2200dn, 2200dse, 2200dt and 2200dtn all take the 96A. The later LaserJet 2300 uses a different cartridge (HP 10A).

What LaserJet 2200d owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support communities and owner reviews, answered in our words.

How do I install it on Windows 10 or 11?

HP offers no current download for the 2200 series. On HP's support forum, a 2200dtn owner on Windows 10 got it working by adding the printer through Windows, which found and installed a driver; HP's Universal Print Driver also installs but printed very slowly for that owner.

Can I put the 2200d on my network?

Not on its own. The 2200d connects by parallel or USB only. The 2200dn and 2200dtn have an HP Jetdirect card built in, and the 2200d has an open EIO slot that takes a Jetdirect card.

What is in the maintenance kit?

The 110V kit (H3978A) contains the fuser, the transfer roller, and the pickup rollers and separation pads for Tray 1 and Tray 2. Worn rollers are the usual cause of misfeeds and multi-sheet pulls on a printer this age.

Paper stops partway out and jams before the fuser. What causes that?

Technicians on a repair forum point first to the fuser, and to the laser scanner motor if no image appears on the page. Check the fuser and rollers before buying anything else.

LaserJet 2200d quirks worth knowing

  • The "d" means automatic two-sided printing is built in; the plain 2200 has no duplexer, and the dt and dtn add a third paper tray.
  • It prints at 19 ppm and 1200 dpi, and understands PCL 6, PCL 5e and PostScript Level 2 emulation, which helps with older business software.
  • It has parallel, USB and infrared ports, but no Ethernet or Wi-Fi unless you add a Jetdirect card.
  • Maintenance kits are voltage-specific: H3978A is the 110V US version.

Frequently Asked Questions

What toner does the HP LaserJet 2200d use?

HP 96A (C4096A), rated at about 5,000 pages. The drum is built into the cartridge.

Is there a high-yield toner for the LaserJet 2200d?

No. HP made only the 96A for the 2100 and 2200 series; there is no 96X.

Does the LaserJet 2200d need a separate drum?

No. The imaging drum is part of the 96A cartridge, so every toner change also replaces the drum.
