What Ink Does the HP DeskJet 4258e Use?

Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 4258e uses HP 67 ink — one black and one tri-color cartridge. The high-yield HP 67XL cartridges (HP 67XL Black and HP 67XL Tri-Color) print about 240 black and 200 color pages, roughly twice as many as standard HP 67.

Important — HP+ warning: The "e" in HP DeskJet 4258e means it was sold for HP+. If you activated HP+ during setup, the printer is locked to Original HP cartridges for its lifetime, and compatible or remanufactured cartridges will be rejected with a "cartridge problem" or "non-HP cartridge" message. HP+ cannot be switched off after activation. If you skipped HP+ at setup, compatible cartridges work normally — see how to keep HP firmware updates from blocking your ink and our HP Instant Ink vs. compatible cartridges breakdown before you buy.

The HP DeskJet 4258e belongs to HP's DeskJet 4200e series. The same HP 67 / 67XL cartridges fit the DeskJet 4200e, 4255e and 4258e, the DeskJet 4100e/4155e series, as well as the ENVY 6000, 6055e and 6400 series.

The DeskJet 4258e is a home all-in-one with print, scan, copy and mobile fax, plus a 35-sheet automatic document feeder — a step up from the 2700 and 2800 models if you scan multi-page documents.

Do not confuse HP 67 with HP 65 or HP 68. They look similar, but HP 65 fits the older DeskJet 2600/3700 printers and HP 68 fits the newer ENVY 6100e/6500e printers. Neither fits this printer.

Castle Ink carries remanufactured HP 67XL Black (3YM57AN) and HP 67XL Tri-Color (3YM58AN), a HP 67XL Black & Tri-Color 2-pack, and an HP 67XXL Black (3YM59AN) for heavy text printing. Every cartridge is tested, backed by a 1-year guarantee, and ships free on orders over $50 — as long as HP+ is not active on your printer.

How to Replace Ink in the HP DeskJet 4258e

  1. Turn the printer on and open the front ink cartridge access door. Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
  2. Press down lightly on the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it out toward you. The tri-color cartridge sits on the left, black on the right.
  3. Take the new cartridge out of its packaging and pull off the plastic tape by its pink or orange tab. Do not touch the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.
  4. Slide the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle, nozzles facing the printer, and push it forward until it snaps into place.
  5. Close the access door. The printer may print an alignment page — scan it if the control panel or HP Smart app asks you to.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge problem" or "non-HP cartridge detected": Check whether HP+ is active in the HP Smart app. If it is, only Original HP cartridges will work. If it is not, wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth, let them dry, and reseat the cartridge.

Streaks or missing colors: Run "Clean Printheads" from the HP Smart app or the printer's Tools menu. The printhead is built into each cartridge on this printer, so if one cleaning cycle does not fix it, the cartridge itself is the likely culprit.

Low-ink warning on a brand-new printer: The cartridges that ship in the box are lower-yield setup cartridges. That early warning is normal — it is not a fault.

Bottom Line

The HP DeskJet 4258e runs on HP 67, and HP 67XL is the better value. Check whether HP+ was turned on before you buy anything other than Original HP ink — that single setting decides which cartridges will work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the HP DeskJet 4258e use HP 67 or HP 67XL?
Both fit the same slots. XL simply holds more ink.

Why does my HP DeskJet 4258e reject compatible cartridges?
Most likely HP+ was activated during setup. HP+ locks the printer to Original HP cartridges and cannot be turned off afterward.

Does using remanufactured cartridges void my warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, HP cannot void your printer warranty only because you used compatible or remanufactured cartridges. HP+ is a separate restriction you agree to during setup.

How are these page yields measured?
They are approximate figures based on HP's ISO/IEC 24711 testing. Real results depend on what and how often you print.
