Important — HP+ warning: The "e" in HP DeskJet 4258e means it was sold for HP+. The HP DeskJet 4258e belongs to HP's DeskJet 4200e series. The same HP 67 / 67XL cartridges fit the DeskJet 4200e, 4255e and 4258e, the DeskJet 4100e/4155e series, as well as the ENVY 6000, 6055e and 6400 series.

The DeskJet 4258e is a home all-in-one with print, scan, copy and mobile fax, plus a 35-sheet automatic document feeder — a step up from the 2700 and 2800 models if you scan multi-page documents.

Do not confuse HP 67 with HP 65 or HP 68. They look similar, but HP 65 (now sold as the combined HP 63/65) fits the older DeskJet 2600/3700 printers and HP 68 fits the newer ENVY 6100e/6500e printers. Neither fits this printer.

How to Replace Ink in the HP DeskJet 4258e

  1. Turn the printer on and open the front ink cartridge access door. Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
  2. Press down lightly on the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it out toward you. The tri-color cartridge sits on the left, black on the right.
  3. Take the new cartridge out of its packaging and pull off the plastic tape by its pink or orange tab. Do not touch the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.
  4. Slide the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle, nozzles facing the printer, and push it forward until it snaps into place.
  5. Close the access door. The printer may print an alignment page — scan it if the control panel or HP Smart app asks you to.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge problem" or "non-HP cartridge detected": Check whether HP+ is active in the HP Smart app. If it is, only Original HP cartridges will work. If it is not, remember that dynamic security still rejects cartridges with non-HP chips. For a cartridge with an HP chip, wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth, let them dry, and reseat the cartridge.

Streaks or missing colors: Run "Clean Printheads" from the HP Smart app or the printer's Tools menu. The printhead is built into each cartridge on this printer, so if one cleaning cycle does not fix it, the cartridge itself is the likely culprit.

Low-ink warning on a brand-new printer: The cartridges that ship in the box are lower-yield setup cartridges. That early warning is normal — it is not a fault.

No. HP's 2026 change merged HP 63 and HP 65 and refreshed HP 61. HP 67 and 67XL are unchanged.

How much paper does it hold, and can it copy a multi-page original?

The input tray holds 60 sheets, which some owners find small. The automatic document feeder takes up to 35 pages for copying and scanning.

Does it print two-sided automatically?

No. HP lists manual two-sided printing for the DeskJet 4200e series, so you turn the stack over when prompted.

Mine came with Instant Ink. What happens when the trial ends?

The Sam's Club bundle included six months of HP Instant Ink with HP+. That is a subscription trial, not spare cartridges. When it ends you either keep paying for the subscription or buy cartridges, and with HP+ active those must be Original HP.

  • Staples lists the DeskJet 4252e, 4255e and 4258e together as HP 67XL printers. The 4258e was the version sold at Sam's Club, with a longer Instant Ink trial than the retail 4255e.
  • The "fax" in HP's marketing is mobile fax through the HP Smart app. There is no phone jack.
  • Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz only and there is no Ethernet port. Owners of the near-identical 4255e report it going offline and needing a restart to reconnect.
