How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet 6962
- Power on the printer and open the ink cartridge access door.
- Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
- Press the front of the empty cartridge to release it, then pull it straight out.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and remove the protective tape and orange cap — do not touch the copper contacts.
- Slide the cartridge into its color-coded slot until it clicks, then close the access door.

"Cartridge Problem" error: Remove the flagged cartridge, wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth, and reinsert firmly until it clicks.
Streaky or faded prints: Run the printhead cleaning tool from the printer's control panel or the HP software. Repeat up to three times if quality doesn't improve.
Alignment issues: After installing any new cartridge, run an alignment from the printer's tools menu to restore sharp text and color registration.
Cartridge rejected after an update: Other HP 902 printers use HP's dynamic security, which blocks cartridges with non-HP chips, and HP may do the same on the 6962. Reseating won't fix that. Cartridges that keep the original HP chip, like our remanufactured HP 902XL, are the safer choice.

Can I mix standard and XL cartridges?
Yes. HP even sells a 4-pack of one 902XL black and standard 902 cyan, magenta and yellow (T0A39AN) for that setup.
Is there a bigger black cartridge than the 902XL?
HP 906XL black (T6M18AN) is rated for about 1,500 pages, but it is sold for the OfficeJet Pro 6960 series. We couldn't confirm that it fits the 6962, so check before you buy one.
Can it print with only black when a color runs out?
Retailer guidance for the 6962 says all four cartridges must be installed for it to print.

- HP now rates the 902XL at about 750 pages for black and each color. Older listings still quote 825 pages.
