What Drum Unit Does the Brother HL-2140 and MFC-7340 Use?

Quick answer: The Brother HL-2140 and MFC-7340 use the DR-360 drum unit, rated for about 12,000 pages. The toner cartridge (TN-330 or high-yield TN-360) clips into the drum. Castle Ink stocks a compatible DR-360 drum, compatible TN-360 toner and a jumbo TN-330/TN-360 cartridge (about 5,200 pages).

The two printers reset the drum differently: the HL-2140 has no screen and uses the Go button, while the MFC-7340 uses its keypad. For toner, see HL-2140 toner and MFC-7340 toner.

How Do I Replace the Drum?

  1. Leave the printer on, open the front cover and pull out the drum and toner assembly.
  2. Push down the green lock lever and lift the toner cartridge out of the old DR-360.
  3. Unpack the new drum without touching the drum surface, and push the toner cartridge in until it clicks.
  4. Slide the green corona-wire tab back and forth a few times, then return it to its home position.
  5. Slide the assembly back in and leave the front cover open for the reset.

How Do I Reset the Drum Counter?

HL-2140: with the front cover open, press and hold Go for about four seconds until all the LEDs light, release it, then close the cover.

MFC-7340: with the front cover open, press Clear/Back. When the display asks "Replace Drum?", press 1 for Yes, wait for "Accepted", then close the cover.

Don't reset the counter when you only change toner. More: How to replace and reset a Brother drum unit.

Drum Error, Drum Light and Replace Drum

Drum Error (MFC-7340 display, or the Drum and Error lights on the HL-2140) usually means a dirty corona wire, often right after a toner change. Slide the green tab on the drum back and forth several times and return it home before you buy a drum. Drum End Soon or a steady Drum light means the drum is near the end of its life. Replace Drum means it has passed its rated life. If either message stays after a new drum, the counter wasn't reset. Our drum vs. toner guide explains how to tell drum problems from toner problems.

Which Other Printers Use the DR-360?

The DR-360 and TN-330/TN-360 also fit the HL-2170W, DCP-7030, DCP-7040, DCP-7045N, MFC-7320, MFC-7345N, MFC-7440N and MFC-7840W. The HL-2150N is mainly a European model and takes different part numbers outside North America.

What HL-2140 and MFC-7340 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, Brother's support pages and owner reviews, answered in our words.

My MFC-7340 says Drum Error right after I put in new toner. What now?

Clean the corona wire first: slide the green tab on the drum several times and return it home. If the drum is old and the error stays, replace it and reset the counter (cover open, Clear/Back, then 1).

The Drum light on my HL-2140 is still on after I replaced the drum.

The counter needs resetting. With the front cover open, hold Go until all the LEDs light, then release it and close the cover.

I cleaned the corona wire and the HL-2140 still shows Drum Error.

Check that the green tab is back in its home position and the toner is clicked into the drum. If the error stays, the drum needs replacing.

Can I reset the drum counter without replacing the drum?

It clears the light, but Brother advises against it unless the drum is new, and print quality will keep getting worse as the drum wears.

HL-2140 and MFC-7340 quirks worth knowing

  • On the MFC-7340, Clear/Back only resets the drum with the front cover open. With the cover closed it just cancels.
  • Drum Error on these models is usually toner dust on the corona wire, not a worn-out drum.
  • Brother rates the DR-360 at about 12,000 pages, about four or five TN-360 cartridges.
  • The HL-2140 has no screen, so every drum and toner message is shown by its LEDs.
