Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide called the TN-360 the standard cartridge. The TN-360 is Brother's high-yield cartridge (about 2,600 pages). The standard cartridge is the TN-330 (about 1,500 pages), and both fit the MFC-7840W.

The Brother MFC-7840W is a monochrome laser printer that uses the TN-330 (standard, about 1,500 pages) or TN-360 (high yield, about 2,600 pages) toner cartridge and the DR-360 drum unit. The toner produces the printed image while the drum transfers it to paper — they are two separate consumables on this model.

Discontinued. We found the MFC-7840W only in Brother's 2011 catalog, not in Brother's current U.S. lineup, and could not confirm a direct successor. This score rates it for current owners.

Brother TN360 Toner & Drum at a Glance

Consumable Part Number Page Yield Type
Black Toner TN-330 ~1,500 pages Standard
Black Toner TN-360 ~2,600 pages High yield
Drum Unit DR-360 ~12,000 pages Lasts about 4–5 TN-360s or 8 TN-330s

TN-330 and TN-360 also fit other Brother models, including the HL-2140, HL-2150N, HL-2170W, DCP-7030, DCP-7040, MFC-7340, and MFC-7440N, making it a high-volume cartridge family that is widely stocked in genuine, remanufactured, and compatible versions.

How to Replace the Toner and Drum

  1. Power on the Brother MFC-7840W and open the toner access cover.
  2. Pull out the toner/drum assembly as a single unit.
  3. To replace just the toner, push the green lock lever and separate the toner from the drum, then snap in the new TN360 cartridge.
  4. To replace the drum, install the existing toner into the new DR-360 drum unit.
  5. Slide the assembly back into the printer. If you replaced the drum, reset the drum counter before you close the cover: press Clear, then 1, and close the cover when the display shows Accepted.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Replace Toner" or low-toner warning: A new TN-330 or TN-360 resets the toner count by itself through the reset gear on the cartridge, so there is no front-panel toner reset to do. If the message stays after a new install, the usual cause is a refilled or remanufactured cartridge without a new reset gear, or a dirty sensor window.

Faded or streaky prints: Gently rock the toner cartridge side-to-side to redistribute toner, then reinstall. If streaks remain, clean the corona wire by sliding the green tab back and forth several times.

Paper jams or smudges: Inspect the paper path and pickup roller for wear. Replacing worn rollers and keeping the printer dust-free prevents repeated print-quality issues.

What MFC-7840W owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, Brother's support pages and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Is there a cheaper, smaller toner than the TN-360?

Yes. Brother's standard-yield TN-330 fits too and is rated for about 1,500 pages. The TN-360 is the high-yield version at about 2,600 pages.

How often does the drum need replacing?

Brother rates the DR-360 drum at about 12,000 pages. That is roughly four or five TN-360 cartridges, or about eight TN-330s, at rated yields.

How do I clear "Replace Drum" after fitting a new DR-360?

With the printer on, open the front cover and press Clear. When the display asks about replacing the drum, press 1, then close the cover once it shows Accepted.

Will it connect to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network?

No. Its wireless is 802.11b/g, so it needs a 2.4 GHz network. It also has Ethernet and USB ports.

MFC-7840W quirks worth knowing

  • There is no chip on TN-330 or TN-360 cartridges. A small reset gear on a new cartridge tells the printer a fresh one is in and zeroes the page count. Starter cartridges have no reset gear, and a refilled cartridge needs a new one.
  • Brother originally gave the TN-330 and TN-360 different gear trains so the printer could tell standard from high yield. It later moved both to one gear style.
  • The fax side is stronger than on the USB-only MFC-7340: a 33.6K bps Super G3 modem and 32MB of memory that holds about 600 fax pages, against 14.4K and 16MB.
  • On older units, jams that keep happening at the drum or rear door often come from a worn fuser rather than the drum, according to a repair technician's diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What toner does the Brother MFC-7840W use?
A: The TN-330 (standard, about 1,500 pages) or the TN-360 (high yield, about 2,600 pages), with the separate DR-360 drum unit.

Q: Can I use compatible TN360 cartridges?
A: Yes. TN-330 and TN-360 cartridges have no authentication chip, so the printer doesn't check who made them. What matters is the reset gear: a new compatible cartridge needs one, or the toner message can linger.

Q: Where can I buy TN360 toner?
A: Browse TN360 cartridges at Castle Ink. We sell compatible TN360 high-yield toner and a compatible DR360 drum. For a genuine TN-330 or TN-360, buy Brother's own.
